Chapter 50

She had just walked to the side of the road when a black Rolls-Royce came out of nowhere and suddenly stopped right in front of her.

The car window was rolled down, revealing Barton’s handsome face.

“Get in.”

He turned his head and looked at her, the two words spoken in a light but firm tone.

Joelle had stripped off all vigilance against him after the few earlier encounters, and hence, she got into the car without hesitation.

After settling in the car, she realized that Max was behind the wheel.

“Hi.”

Max waved at her with a friendly smile. “We meet again, mademoiselle.”

“Hi, long time no see.”

Joelle nodded politely.

However, she couldn’t shake the peculiar feeling about the way Max looked at her. He kept glancing between her and Barton, a mystifying vibe radiating from his eyes…

Joelle didn’t know that Max was the one who had created the ‘coincidence’.

Five minutes ago, they happened to drive by the block, so Max asked amusingly, “Hey, we’re not far from Joelle’s school, do you want to go and check her out?”

Max swore that he was just kidding!

Little did he expect that Barton would freeze for a second while handling his documents and utter casually, “Let’s go.”

His remark was so short and precise and Max sucked in an astonished breath.

Then, he smirked chicly and asked again, “Hey, that necklace that suddenly appeared around your neck—it’s from her, isn’t it?”

Barton glared at him before blurting, “None of your business.”

He neither admitted nor denied it.

Yet, Max knew him like the back of his hand! He knew from the ambiguous reply that he was right!

This was also why he couldn’t hide the amazement and admiration when he looked at Joelle.

After all…

She must have possessed some extraordinary superpower to accomplish the impossible mission!

Joelle felt a little awkward and uncomfortable by the glance that she huddled to the side, keeping the distance between herself and Barton. She didn’t want to provoke jealousy between the two men.

Barton’s face stiffened upon the scene and he glared at Max coldly. Max trembled in fear and returned his gaze on the road, reposing himself as a professional driver—keeping his mouth shut and treating himself as the invisible man in the car.

To break the ice, Joelle simply uttered, “Why are you here? Are you just passing by the block?”

“Yes.”

The boss mumbled a lie without batting an eye and then continued, “Are you free tomorrow? I want you to do me a favor.”

“Tomorrow?” Joelle murmured timidly.

She had promised Hugo that she would attend the hacker competition tomorrow and she couldn’t break the promise.

Seeing Joelle’s hesitation, Barton spoke again, “The day after tomorrow will do.”

“Alright then!”

Joelle agreed instantly in a straightforward and no-nonsense manner.

Then, as if she had suddenly thought of something, she asked, “What do you want me to do?”

“You’ll know.”

He looked at her, his dark eyes deep and mysterious like a cave.

Max recoiled in surprise as he listened to their conversation.

Who said that Lord James was a dum-dum in the relationship department? He had literally just asked her out, whatever the reason was, didn’t he?
