5. HE CAUGHT HER.
Author: Oluwafunmito StarHer feet were now hurting from the walking exercises she's been performing with her boss since morning.
She grumbled as her stomach rumbled, not eating the previous night was a really a bad decision to make, She regretted not eating before leaving the office too.
Everything on her mind was how to get to lunch after the stressful inspection activities she was doing with her boss, they swerved down the quiet streets checking the houses out.
The company houses suited in a newly developed area of the town, the ones built down to be leased out in future.
"How many houses are in this Estate?" Roshan asked the contractor in charge of building the Estate.
"We have about thirty five incomplete buildings sir." He replied. "Twenty have been completed already, and the remaining are under construction as you can see sir." He moved over to the edge of the plank placed on one of the uncompleted buildings. "This is the only building that we haven't gone far with." The building was still in the stage of lintel, the materials to be used were already provided and he wondered why they were delaying the work.
"And why is that so?" He asked the Contractor.
"The builders have issues with the sloppy land and they decided to face it fully when they are done with the other buildings." He told Roshan.
"Are they the only builders we have in the whole of Kano?" He asked slightly irritated.
"They are the best in the whole of Kano sir, we have to be patient to get the best out of this place. If we rush it, the building won't be firm like we want it to be sir." He explained.
"I want you to hasten up the building process, I don't like wasting time and you know it."
Ben stood there and watched them as they interacted, this was not her Job at all.
Mrs Hadiza was the one in charge of stuffs like this, her work was within the office and she loathed the fact that he had to make her go through this unnecessary stress. The contractor looked her way and winked at her when Roshan wasn't looking. Ben gave him that 'seriously?' Look, she rolled her eyes at him and looked away.
They proceeded to the other buildings, and checked them out one after the other.
Ben couldn't kill Roshan, she was so mad at him and she prayed Mrs Hadiza will recover quickly from her illness and resume back to her duties. They got to one of the duplex that was under construction and Roshan beamed with satisfaction, he loved the work.
"Impressive." He commended.
"I knew you were going to like it sir." The Contractor smiled, his eyes fixated on Ben.
"What exactly do you want, staring at me?" Ben spoke up, she was angry at how his eyes were ogling all over her body, he was staring at her flirtatiously like she was a slut. "What the hell do you want?" She asked as she walked closer to meet him, he directed his attention away from her and quickly pretended to be checking the tiles out.
"The tiles are good, do you like the design?" He asked Roshan.
"They are beautiful." He replied, oblivious of the little drama going on between the contractor and his secretary.
They got to the Balcony and he rested his hands on the handrails,
Ben looked at him and he caught her eyes but she quickly looked away."Done with the inspection," He told the building contractor. "Make sure everything is in place before the next inspection."
"We can leave now." He told Ben, slowly they got down the staircase Ben was at their back and she was getting impatient she rushed to get passed Roshan and the contractor, they were walking like their feet were hurting.
She slipped and missed a step, she lost balance and slowly she was falling down before she could get down Roshan held her firmly by the waist. "Watch your steps, Benedicta!" He shouted holding her to himself, Ben looked at him that was the first time ever he called her name and it sounded better when coming out from his mouth, did he really know her full name was Benedicta? Of course! She was his secretary. Her head was spinning with unspeakable joy. But why? He looked into her eyes and she felt a sharp cut in her chest, she looked at him too and couldn't decipher the look on his face. He was still holding her, The contractor cleared his throat bringing the two young adults back to reality.
"Hmmmm." Ben cleared her throat, "Thank you and sorry." She rushed downstairs without hearing more words from him, he watched her as she ran downstairs.
"Mr Hakeem." Roshan faced the contractor. "I think I have to leave now, please monitor this project very well. I will transfer some money to your account as soon as I get to the office."
"Thank you sir." The contactor smiled.
Who doesn't likes money?Outside the building, Ben was standing by the car waiting for her boss.
He didn't let any chauffeurs drive them, he told all of them he wanted to ride the car himself.
Ben didn't look at him when he got to the car. He ignored her too, he unlocked the door and she entered the car she sat at the backseat and noticed he was looking at her through the rear mirror, she looked away and looked out from the side window of the car.
"Are you alright?" He asked her, his voice low and gentle.
"Me?" She heard him but not sure if he was actually referring to her. Why would he care about that?
"Yes," He replied.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She laughed, nothing was funny but she didn't know what to do at that moment.
"Good." He kicked the car and started the engine. "You should learn to be calm next time, you really need to be calm in some situations." He took a U-turn, even the way he drove Mesmerised Ben.
"Hmmmm." She muttered.
"I know that's what you'll say but I have to tell you as my secretary that you need to be reserved." He told her.
'Is it your fault?' Ben subconscious mind asked him, she was there dying of hunger and he was being a big daddy scolding her for being hyper. She nodded her head and smiled. 'No be your fault.' Her subconscious said again, if Mrs Hadiza was well enough to come to the office. She won't be here with him, that was the last time she'd go out with him and that was why she just smiled away the anger that was forming inside of her.
They got to the office and immediately he stopped the car, Ben got down and banged the door. She knew she could not always control her boiling temper and seating in the car for few more minutes listening to his chastisements will make her anger erupt, so it was better she left the car than being rude to her boss.
Roshan glared at her as she walked into the reception, there was something about her and he couldn't understand that thing yet. Did he just start to notice there was something about her he couldn't bring himself to understand? No, she was never in his thoughts and he has never thought of her as being more than his rude secretary.
He shook his head and got down from the car, he was welcomed in by few staffs outside.
He got to Ben's office and met her devouring a large loaf of bread with butter spread all over it, he stopped and looked at her.
Was it hunger that made her behaved that way? And why was she eating like she's been fasting for a year now? He shook his head again and walked into his office.Ben didn't take her eyes away from her food, she eyed him when he was out of view.
"Rubbish." She muttered and removed the crumbs of bread that fell on her chin, "maybe that was what he was looking at, his business though." She took a large bite and ate happily. "Food is life." She hummed a song and shook her head as she ate.
