Chapter 0016

A hard slap hit me in the face. Maureen pushed me and slammed the door in my face.

I stepped back, dejected and unsure of what to do next. I just wanted to see Marcus and apologize to him. I wanted to make sure he’s okay. I hoped he understood that I wasn’t thinking clearly.

The door opened and Maureen came out. \"Sarah, I could have you arrested right now.”

“I feel bad about what I did, Maureen.”

“Is that really why you came here?\"

“I want to ask him what really happened to my parents. What happened to the company.”

\"Please let me in. I won’t bother you after this.\" I looked at Maureen with and begged her for the first time.

Mo Maureen whispered in my ear. \"Let you in? So you can tell him what I did? Or do you want to play the recording to him?\" She laughed as though she had just heard the funniest joke.

“Look, big sister. He isn’t even going to hear what you have to say to him. He’s sleeping now. Let him rest,” she said with a shooing motion. “Get as far away from here as you can. I promise I won’t press attempted murder charges against you.”

I was stupid for even coming here. Of course she’d never let me get near him. And even if I had gotten past her, what then?

With Tom\'s help, I finally buried my parents.

I heard that Marcus was in the intensive care room for a day, and then he was stable enough to be moved to another room. Tom asked his cousin to go to the hospital to check.

That day, I received the divorce agreement from Marcus Mo.

I’ve been thinking about it for months, but now it was real. I felt so sad.

\"Summer, you asked me to take you away, remember?” Tom touched my hand. “He tried to kill your child. We had an accident running away from him, do you remember?”

Tom looked down at the divorce agreement, and then back up at me.

”I hate to say this, but I don’t think he ever loved you at all. If you stay married to him, after you have the baby, sooner or later he’ll get you killed so he can get all your family’s property. Do you want your child to grow up without a mother?”

Tom looked me in the eye. “Summer, if you give birth to the child and stay with him, he’ll keep it to get his inheritance, but I’m sure one way or another, he and his creepy sister are going to take it away from you.

I shuddered at the thought. Maureen had killed my parents, and she’d definitely treat my child as bad as she treated me. And if I’m gone, what’s to stop her from killing her nephew?

“Tom , it wasn’t really him, it was Maureen. She was the one who killed my parents.\"

I kept trying to justify everything in my head. I don’t know why I held on to him the way I did, even after everything that happened between us.

After I had tried to kill him, I reminded myself.

\"Sarah, he is the president of Morse. Do you really think he’s innocent? If he hadn’t bought those shares himself, it doesn’t mean he had nothing to do with it. Even if it was his bimbo sister who did it, he’s probably the one who coached her.\"

It made perfect sense, but it was surreal at the same time.

“I can’t just let her win. I gotta go.”

“Where?”

“To the hospital. I want to hear it straight from his mouth.”

“Sarah! They could throw you in jail for stabbing him!”

I was stubborn. I went straight to the hospital, and . Marcus Mo’s room was the big suite, and it was so spacious that the voices from inside kind of echoed.

The door was open, and I was preparing to push Tom in, when Maureen’s sugary sweet voice said,\"Marcus, I have something to tell you.\"

\"What is it?\"

\"Marcus, Sarah came to you the night you went to the hospital. She accused me of killing her parents. I don\'t know why. I said it wasn\'t me. She slapped me twice. Why don\'t you call the police to report that she stabbed you?”

I left Tom in the hallway and kicked the door open. \"Maureen, you know what you have done! Return my mobile phone to me, and let Marcus Mo listen to the recording!\"

\"Marcus, please report her! She stabbed you, and now she’s coming after me too!\"

Maureen moved closer to Marcus and held his hand.

Looking at them like this, I was even more infuriated. I stepped forward. Tom had wheeled himself inside and was right next to me.

\"What are you doing here, Sarah? Would you like another knife so you could finish me off?\"

\"Is that what Maureen coached you to say to me? I know she’s hated me even before we got married.”

“Would you stab me while your lover holds me down, or would it be the other way around?”
