Chapter 21

Sitting on the lawn, Rachel could not help but smile as well when she saw Yakov’s genuine smile. It was evident that this man was truly fond of the children here, unlike some of her suitors who put up a facade of liking kids in their pursuit of her. Yakov was in the midst of playing with the little girl before the phone in his pockets rang. Taking a look at the caller ID, Yakov realized it was from the handsome young man from the day before. Putting Yannie back on the ground and telling her to go play somewhere else, Yakov walked off to the side and answered the call. “What is it?” The handsome young man’s voice sounded solemn across the phone. “I’ve received a tip, Boss. An assassin’s coming after your wife today.” “An assassin!” Yakov bit out. That instant, the handsome young man felt the frost Yakov was emitting despite the fact that they were separated by a phone call. He may not understand why Boss cared so much for this Yin City female president, but he knew, crystal clea

Chapter 22

Sitting on the leather couch in the office, Jeanne sipped on the black tea that Yulia’s secretary, Naomi Lewis, had brewed. Known to break down and get rid of tummy fat, this was a tea widely enjoyed by females. At the same time, Naomi had also done a background check of Jeanne Rivers and placed a document containing the info before Yulia. Jeanne Rivers, twenty-three years old. She was champion of the Provincial Female Martial Arts at the age of eighteen, then enlisted herself in the military and joined the Female Special Forces. Being deployed on seventeen missions over five years, she had been awarded the Merit of First Order twice, of Second Order five times, and of Third Order once. Jeanne was also well-versed in the art of Chinese kickboxing, freestyle fighting, counter terrorism and peacekeeping. Honorably discharged five years later, Jeanne Rivers applied to be a female bodyguard, and had made a name for herself within the short span of a month, mainly taking jobs that requi

Chapter 23

It was no easy feat to detect the six that blended in with the flow of people in the CMD, but this was Yakov Xayarath we were talking about and nothing could escape his eyes. Yakov stood, ready to apprehend the six men for a thorough interrogation only to see Yulia walk out of Yates Tower with a lady of tan skin following behind her. A vast contrast between the difference in their skin tones.A glance at the lady beside Yulia Yates was all Yakov needed to realize that she was well-trained in combat. From her gaze that constantly flitted around their surroundings, to her steps that were just far enough apart but not too far, to the way she carried herself; ready to charge and fight at any time. Yakov pondered for a moment before leaving the coffee shop. Giving up on apprehending the six suspicious men, he walked straight toward Yulia. Having brought Jeanne Rivers to lunch in the company cafeteria, Yulia Yates decided to send Jeanne Rivers home. The incident with the listening dev

Chapter 24

“We can take my car.” Jeanne Rivers spoke up, clicking a button on her car keys which prompted a Volkswagen Jetta to beep twice. Seeing the disdainful gaze Yulia Yates shot at her, Jeanne Rivers smiled. “I take it this is the person you told me about, President Yates?” “Yeah.” Yulia Yates nodded. At that moment, Yakov had already seated himself comfortably at the back seat of Jeanne’s Jetta. “Let’s go, President Yates. Let’s take a look at your house.” Jeanne beckoned Yulia with a wave of her hand. There was nothing much Yulia Yates could do but hop on into the passenger seat of Jeanne’s car. Then, she adjusted the seat and nudged it as upfront as she could so to maximize the distance between her Yakov. If Yakov had felt Yulia’s hostility, he did not comment on it. He continued to smile and talk to Jeanne Rivers as if nothing was wrong, asking her if she was a new employee for he had never met someone like her before at the company. While Jeanne was aware of the reason behi

“With your capabilities?” Contempt shone in Jeanne Rivers’ eyes as she glossed over the eleven men around her. “Your ignorance will cost you your life, darling. I’ve already warned you, though daddy doesn’t mind spilling the blood of another today. Don’t worry though, daddy will make sure to acquaint you with the true definition of pain before you die!” The leader charged toward Jeanne with his dagger raised above his head, aiming to slash at her face. In the passenger seat, Yulia was gifted with a clear view of the scene outside the car through its visor. Yulia Yates shouted the instant the opponent raised his dagger to strike and closed her eyes instinctively, her heart pounding in her ears. She had never been in such a situation before. Even men would cower in fear when faced with daggers pointed at them, no? A loud “Crash!” had Yulia’s tightly shut eyes shooting open, only to find the very man who was previously running at Jeanne with a dagger in his hand lying on the bonn

Chapter 26

With both his legs broken, the man fell kneeling on the floor, and his arms hung limply next to him. The smug grin on his face had turned into fear. Cold sweat beaded on his forehead. Yakov noticed a faint tattoo on the back of the person's neck. He furrowed his brows. "A Nightfall assassin? Who sent you?" The man in the suit gulped hard when he heard Yakov mention 'Nightfall'. Not many people could mention that name so casually. "You know about Nightfall!" His eyes opened wide. "What about it?" Yakov retorted, "Tell me who sent you, and I'll allow you to die with dignity." "Ha, hahaha!" The man in the suit took a deep breath and laughed. "If you know about Nightfall, then you should also know that Nightfall assassins will not divulge their clients' identities, even when faced with the threat of death!" Yakov tilted his head and thought for two seconds. "Right, you have rules to follow. Looking at your tattoo, you must be one of the Thirteen Children of the Night. I've he

Chapter 27

"I can't believe I'm so fortunate to duel with the Dragon King. Haha! Alright, I can tell you who hired me. Promise me that you won't lay a finger on my siblings." "You have no right to negotiate with me!" Yakov spoke coldly. "I'll give you three seconds. Tell me who hired you, and you may die." The man in the suit laughed bitterly. "The one who hired me is from Imperia and has the surname of Sullivan." After he said that, the man in the suit bit the poison capsule hidden behind his teeth. His eyes glazed over, and he fell face-down in front of Yakov. "Sullivan? From Imperia?" Yakov mumbled, ignoring the corpse in front of him. He quickly sent someone a text message. Yakov dragged the corpse out of the north-facing door of the living room into the backyard. He waved his arm toward the air. A black shadow appeared, carried the corpse, and vanished without saying a word. Yakov went back to the living room and made sure that there were no signs of fighting. After that, he walk

Matron Culver, with her head full of silvery-white hair, also smiled when she saw Yakov. "That boy has been calling me on the phone for the past few years. He told me that he had been a waiter, a masseur, and even an electrician. He's been through a lot in the past few years." "Really?" Rachel watched as Yakov was surrounded by the children from the orphanage. He occasionally would carry a child in his arms and lift them high. As the children laughed happily, so did he. The noisy sound of engines interrupted the wholesome scene. Three Mercedes Benz G63s with consecutive plate numbers stopped at the entrance of the orphanage. Three people came out of each of those vehicles. There were males dressed in business suits and leather shoes, as well as females dressed in expensive clothes. They seemed to be in their thirties. The people started surveying the orphanage after they got out of their cars. One of the females who looked like a secretary took out some blueprints and pointed at

Matron Culver pointed at the people at the entrance of the orphanage and said, "Ms. Kyne has negotiated with them many times, but they have not given us a satisfactory answer. Once the holiday resort is complete, the government will demolish the orphanage. The government ordered the developers to relocate the orphanage, but do you know where they are building it? It's next to a chemical waste processing plant! Poisonous substances are pumped into the air and water every day. I'm old and I'll be gone in two years, but I feel sorry for the kids." Silent tears slid down the Matron's face as she looked at the children playing on the field. "Those heartless developers don't care about the children at all. They only have money in their eyes! How can they possibly relocate the kids next to a waste processing plant?" She sobbed. "I'll go talk to them." Yakov stood up. "It's no use, Yakov!" The Matron shook her head. "How do you know that there's no use if I don't try, Matron?" Yakov sm

Chapter 30

Rachel organized her thoughts and briefly explained to Yakov how the developers wanted to demolish the orphanage and build a holiday resort there. She also mentioned that the developers had far greater financial resources than her company. They were only slightly lesser than Zircon Enterprises, the second biggest corporation in Yin Prefecture. Rachel could never hope to stop them if they insisted on demolishing the orphanage. Just as Rachel finished speaking, she noticed that Yakov was drawing something on the ground. Her view was blocked by Yakov's back, and so she stepped around him. Her eyes opened wide when she saw what Yakov was drawing. While she was explaining about the problem earlier, Yakov had used a stone to draw a map of the area surrounding the orphanage onto the cement floor, including all major and minor transportation routes that led into the urban areas. Someone who lived at the same place for their entire lives might not even have been able to remember the layou
