Chapter 19

This man was Wendy’s uncle—Jared Summer. It was obvious that he brought up the sensitive subject to embarrass Wendy.

She replied with a poker face, “My apologies Uncle, we decided to get married rather hastily and didn’t have time to inform everyone.”

“Is that so? Hmm, so you gave birth and then decided to go off and get married? Interesting.”

Jared and the surrounding relatives wore expressions of disdain.

They continuously picked on Wendy. This was getting on James’ nerves and he was just about ready to take action when he thought about his wife’s previous warning. He held back.

“Nephew-in-law, I can’t help but think that you seem rather familiar. It's like I’ve seen you somewhere before…James Murphy, your name sounds familiar too…”

Jared squinted his eyes and looked at James, pretending to be in deep thought.

“Oh, I remember now!”

He slammed the table and jumped to his feet, pointing at James while loudly stating, “You, you’re that live-in son-in-law from the Fuller family who got divorced! You caused a ruckus at their banquet the other night. I was there too.

“That’s why both the Fuller and Larson families are picking on us!”

Jared was looking for trouble.

There was complete silence. The Summer family directed their furious gaze toward James and Wendy.

James furrowed his eyebrows and prepared to stand up to say something.

At this time, Martin said, “Jared, sit down. Today’s my 70th birthday, and there are tons of guests around. What are you doing causing this commotion?”

Hearing this, Jared slowly sat back down, mischievously grinning at James.

Martin glanced at James and Wendy, then looked around at the Summer family before saying in a low voice, “We, the Summer family might not be what we once were, but that’s not to say that anyone can just push us around. Tomorrow is President Murphy’s appointment ceremony. As long as we’re able to gain his favor, even both the Fuller and Larson families together won’t be able to land a single hand on us!”

Jared, with his eyebrows furrowed, said, “Father, we won’t be the only ones at the ceremony. The Fullers, the Larsons, and even the Moore and Wagner families will be there just waiting to meet this mysterious President Murphy.”

“Countless people are waiting to grasp at this opportunity. We have to gain President Murphy’s protection. Hopefully, it won’t be too complicated.”

The National Medical Association’s President Appointment Ceremony would be held in York City. The news came very suddenly, even the preparation time given was only two days.

Even so, the noble and the wealthy in York City were all hoping to get acquainted with President Murphy.

Under the protection of this high-skilled and unrivaled doctor, any family would be pushed up the hierarchy.

Unfortunately, Chelsea Olson, who was in charge of the preparations, was a tough lady. Regardless of who it was that asked her, she refused to disclose any information about President Murphy. Even the head of York City’s wealthiest family, Verdell Fuller of the Fuller family, had approached her several times only to be met with a cold shoulder.

“Yes, trying to get well-acquainted with President Murphy will be really hard.”

“We basically have no chance.”

A large portion of the Summer family wore expressions of anguish as they shook their heads in dismay.

Martin looked at the disheartened faces of his family members and said in a cold voice, “This is our family’s opportunity to reclaim our glory. We can’t let it slip through our fingers! You all should well know, if we were to get on President Murphy’s good side, it will bring tremendous amounts of benefits to our family.

“Not only will we not have to worry about being pushed around by the Fullers and the Larsons anymore, but there’s also a chance that we can once more reclaim our position as York City’s most powerful family. We can’t miss out on this opportunity.”

“Father, I’ve tried. Even Secretary Olson hasn’t met him.”

Jared’s face turned into a deep scowl. He sighed in despair.

“This President Murphy is too mysterious. I’ve heard that plenty of international tycoons and wealthy families are all looking for him!”

“Yes, yes, he is so secretive in his movements. This is just too hard.”

The family members sighed and shook their heads in dismay once more.

Bam!

Martin angrily slammed the table. He faced the useless bunch and bellowed, “Have you all already given up? Thank goodness I allowed Mateo to be the one to help with the preparations for the ceremony. It would have been a waste if I had given the opportunity to you lot.”

“Huh.” Jared coldly remarked. He did not get along with his little brother Mateo. Helping out with the ceremony was an invaluable opportunity to boost his reputation. Alas, that opportunity had been given to his little brother instead. He was not happy.

Jared happened to catch a glance at Wendy and noticed that she had her head facing down, not uttering a single word.

He sneered to himself. ‘Since your father took away my opportunity, I’ll push this arduous task your way. Don’t even think about hiding!’

“Father, since Mateo is helping with the preparations, I think Wendy should be the one to approach President Murphy. She was once the most beloved sweetheart in York City, after all.” Jared suggested.

This immediately garnered the approval of the others.

“Definitely. Wendy was the one who disgraced our family. It’s time for her to contribute.”

“Yes, we shouldn’t just let her laze around. No man can resist a beautiful woman. Sending her would be the right choice.”

“She should be the one to do this. There isn’t a more suitable choice.”

Wendy was stunned. How had this arduous task been assigned to her all of a sudden? There was no dodging it now.

At that moment, James whispered into Wendy’s ear, “Don’t be afraid, your father will be helping out with the preparations. Just say yes to them and get on President Murphy’s good side so that he can take care of our family.”

His words had some sort of magic to them. His tone and voice sent a hypnotic vibration to Wendy’s eardrums, causing her to get dizzy. His words were the only thing left in her mind.

“Wendy, will you do it?”

Martin saw Wendy’s eyes light up with anticipation. She was beautiful. They might have a chance after all.

“I… I… I will”

Wendy obeyed James’ words, semi-consciously accepting the task.

“Great, now that’s my granddaughter!”

Martin enthusiastically slammed the table.

The knock on the table woke Wendy up from her trance-like state.

“I, what did I do? What… What did I just agree to?” Wendy tried to recall what was said while in a deeply confused state.

Jared smiled triumphantly and said, “Wendy, you gave us your word. You can’t go back on it now.”

“Agreed, you’ve promised in front of everyone.”

All the relatives nodded their heads in agreement. Not wanting to face any trouble themselves, it was better if they assigned this task to Wendy.

Wendy grew pale. She wanted to explain herself to her grandfather.

Then, a trumpet sounded right outside of the hotel

Three black Mercedes-Benzes stopped at the entrance of the hotel. The one in the middle was a Mercedes-Benz S500.

This Mercedes cost a few million, highlighting its owner’s unique social status.

“Hahaha!”

Jared laughed, loudly proclaiming, “Let me introduce everyone to my daughter Jewel and my future son-in-law Howard Moore, the young master of the Moore family!”

“What? The young master of the Moore family?”

“The Moores are the most powerful family in York City!”
