Chapter 11

James laughed and pushed Wendy’s hand away. “With how weak the Larson family is, they can’t do anything to me!”

“You! Why are you so fond of boasting? Stop being so arrogant!”

James was being stupid by not appreciating her help, Wendy thought. She was worried for him, and yet he was there, posing as if he was invincible.

He was only a security guard. How could he stand up against the wealthy and powerful Larson family?

“It will be fine. Don’t worry about me. I’ll take care of myself.”

Wendy was helpless against James, especially when the man refused to listen to her. She said coldly, “As you insist, I won’t say anything more. In the future, everything will follow the premarital contract we signed. Come with me and fetch Bella this afternoon. Remember, don’t screw it up.”

“Of course! I promise that I’ll complete my mission!”

James sounded happy when he heard that they would be fetching their daughter from school.

“You can leave now. I want some time to myself.”

Wendy waved her hand. She then put her forehead into her palms, obviously having a headache over all the annoying affairs.

Seeing her tired expression, James wanted to say something. However, ultimately he did not and merely turned to leave the office.

James sat in his seat the whole day, either playing games or sleeping with his eyes closed. It was evident that he was not worried about his feud with the Larson family even the slightest bit.

The other employees were simultaneously perplexed at and shocked by his demeanor. How was he still so calm when he had offended the wealthy and powerful Larson family?

They could only stay as far away from James as possible, afraid that they would be involved when the Larson family took revenge.

Zack was called out of the conference room by Ian even when a meeting was still in progress.

“Uncle, what’s the matter? Come on, take a smoke.”

Zack handed a cigarette to Ian with a smile.

Ian’s brow was creased as he said anxiously, “Something big has happened to Hugh. I came here to tell you that he may have to spend more than ten years in prison. This is very suspicious. Someone may be screwing us over from behind!”

“What?”

Zack was shocked. He was quite close to his brother, so this was bad news to him.

“Why did it happen? Come on, let’s talk about it in detail inside.”

Zack knew that it was serious, so he quickly took Ian to his office. He locked the door and requested that his secretary did not come in no matter what.

“Uncle, Hugh’s not a good person, but he’s not stupid. He wouldn’t offend people that he shouldn’t recklessly. Is that Wendy the clandestine lover of someone powerful?”

Zack frowned as he listened to Ian’s explanation.

“I can’t think of anyone else in York City who would do this to us aside from the Fang family. However, Fang Yuanyuan is under me, so they wouldn’t do it.”

Zack appeared to be deep in thought.

Rage was written all over Ian’s face. “Someone is definitely targeting us from behind our backs. If not, the two of them wouldn’t have been arrested this morning. Everything they said during their interrogation had been prepared; videos of them confessing their crimes had been sent to the media. We can’t erase the evidence.”

“I’ll call Officer Harris and see what he says.”

Zack picked up his phone and made a call. It has to be said that he put the call on speakerphone.

When the call connected, Zack said politely, “Officer Harris, I’m Zack. I heard that my brother was arrested. Can this…”

“Oh, it’s Zack! I know about it. The proof is all legit. There’s nothing I can do.”

Officer Harris refused to help immediately.

Zack looked furious at Officer Harris’s abject refusal. He was not expecting Liam Harris, whom he was normally close with, to be so heartless. The latter showed no courtesy at all.

Zack refused to give up. He said cheerfully, “Officer, I remember that your birthday is coming soon. I’ll definitely prepare a grand present for you.”

The man on the other end of the phone fell silent for a while before he said in a serious tone of voice, “Zack, I can only tell you that the higher-ups have stipulated that he should be punished heavily. Get your brother a good lawyer, and perhaps a few years might be cut off his sentence. I have something to do, so I can’t talk to you more.”

Before Zack could reply, Harris Lian hung up the phone. The latter’s attitude was extremely cold compared to his initial warm welcome.

Listening to the robotic dial tone, Zack and Ian both wore frowns on their faces.

“That devious old fox!”

Zack cursed furiously.

“By the way, the Summer family’s useless son-in-law seems to be involved in this matter.”

Ian's words made Zack pause momentarily.

“James Murphy? That’s impossible… That useless ass doesn’t have the power to do such a thing. Nevertheless, I’ll teach him a lesson someday no matter what!”

Zack shook his head with a laugh, unable to believe that James was the one behind the Larson family’s unfortunate incidents.

“Uncle, you must investigate this until the end and figure out who’s f*cking us up behind our backs. Don’t be afraid to spend money on the matter.”

“Wendy Summer too. I can make her company go bankrupt any time I want. If it’s her people who are after us, they’ll definitely bail at the first second,” Zack said seriously.

“No problem!”

Ian who’s face had a serious expression on it nodded.

“Ah, I have to go to the toilet again. Blasted food poisoning." Zack clutched at his tummy with a pale face as he dashed to the toilet.

James had done the most to Zack during the celebration feast that day. The latter would be sick for a couple more days before he recovered.

James glanced at his watch again and saw that it was four in the afternoon. He had been waiting for this time to pick his daughter up from school.

He quickly knocked on Wendy’s office door to remind her that it was time to pick up Bella.

“Hm. You’re quite dedicated in doing this.”

Wendy had already gotten ready; she was only waiting to see if James was serious about the matter.

She was quite satisfied with the result.

“Let’s go!”

The two of them walked downstairs together and headed to World Star Preschool.

It was the best preschool in York City. Not only was its environment excellent, but its catering and pedagogical services were top-notch.

Parents fought tooth and nail to send their kids to this public preschool. Wendy had spent lots of money and used her connections, among other things, to send Bella there.

She had gotten pregnant before marriage, so she was looked down on by her friends and relatives alike. She was humiliated and shamed.

Wendy did not want her daughter to be looked down on. Therefore, she hoped fervently that Bella would be able to grow up under the best conditions.

She was powerless as a woman, but she would be the best mother her daughter could ever have!

With the knowledge that he was going to see his daughter soon, James was high up on the clouds. The happier he was, the more sympathy he felt toward the mother and daughter. Little did James and Wendy know that Bella was not having a good time in preschool.

“Class has not finished yet. Why are you running?”

A cute little girl was being pressed against the floor by a female preschool teacher. The girl stumbled, and the children around her laughed at her.

Bella Summer had just reached five years old. She had a small face, pale, pinkish skin, and a pair of bright, big eyes. In her arms was a cute doll.

However, her clothes and shoes were ordinary; they seemed insignificant compared to the branded clothes the other children were wearing.
