Chapter 54

Frank could not afford to make Jane mad, so he pointed at Blake and teased, “Master Ferguson here is complaining about his wife.”

When Jane turned around and saw Blake’s stiff look, she asked, “What’s wrong?”

Jessica was already mute, hence she barely had a presence in the family and had always been the target of bullying, so what could have caused her to offend him this time?

Frank then repeated what Blake had said about Jessica to Jane. Jane nonchalantly grunted and said, “Mr. Ferguson, I never noticed this before, but aren’t you being a little too egoistic?”

Blake looked at her coldly. “What do you mean?”

Jane took a bite from Frank’s chicken egg sandwich and had a sip of milk from his glass before she said with squinted eyes, “Look around you. You are surrounded by friends with bad influence, but what about her back at home? Who does she have?”

Her own brother had sold her away, the husband she was married to treated her badly, and her mother-in-law constantly pressured her to leave the house. The thought of any one of these circumstances was depressing enough, yet she did not even have someone around her to talk to.

On second thought, Jane was quite impressed by Mrs. Ferguson. How could she not lose her mind under such harsh circumstances?

Jane paused after she blurted out her thoughts. The men did not voice their opinion right away. Frank subtly pinched her waist, hinting at her to not call them friends with bad influence.

Jane pouted and giggled. “You are the exception.”

She then added, “You’ve gotten used to the fact that her life revolves around you. She might be a mute, but she’s a human being with thoughts, not a wooden plank. She also has the need to socialize with other people. Tell me, if this isn’t being egoistic, what is?”

She was grateful that she had changed her mind about Blake the last time. If she really had gotten together with the old-fashioned man and had to live with him, based on her feisty personality, she would have flipped the table on day one.

Only that mute could endure Blake’s strange temper.

Blake looked grumpy as he stared at the pond and refused to agree with a single word that came out of Jane’s mouth. “You know nothing!”

Jane grunted. Since he did not appreciate her meddling with other people’s private matters, she did not argue with him.

“Sigh. Oh right, speaking of which…” Jane suddenly thought of her little brother. She said to Blake, “Joe is the only son in my family. If you continue to oppress him and cause him to lose his girlfriend and potentially his children, my mother will go to war with you!”

It was unusual for Joe to get a girlfriend because of his job, but the heartless boss had told him to run a background check on Thomas’s company, causing him to break up with his girlfriend.

Joe was already in his mid-20s, and it was the Lunar New Year in a few months. Did he have to rent a girlfriend for the family reunion dinner?

With a grunt, Blake stood up and looked down at Jane. “Why don’t you look at this from another perspective? If Joe cannot afford to feed his potential wife, would any of the girls even marry him?”

He left after saying that.

Moses’ jaw dropped as he watched Blake walk away. He left without saying anything, similar to his quiet arrival. What a strange guy!

He turned around and saw Jane munching on the sandwich. Then, he finally reacted. “Who did you call a friend with bad influence just now?”

Jane did not answer. She walked to Moses, somehow scaring the man.

“What are you trying to do?!”

Jane stared at him before she bent over to Moses’ delight. “My, my, you don’t have to bow to me just because you said something wrong. I for—”

Before he could even finish his sentence, Jane stood up without even looking at him. She was looking at the sealed cover of a book that she had picked up.

Who would wrap a book with a plastic cover nowadays?

The illustration on the cover was of a famous historical figure. Jane simply flipped through and was stunned by the contents. She quickly flipped back to the front page.

“Chinese Sign Language?

An idiot like Moses would never read this kind of book, so it must be from the other guy.

Moses did not know what she was looking at. He stretched his neck and saw the cover but did not find anything strange. He giggled and said, “This is Blake’s book, isn’t it? He must have forgotten…”

Jane glanced at him and subtly grinned in a meaningful way.

Blake drove back to the mansion.

Miss Susan was cleaning some vegetables in the kitchen, and when she heard a noise at the entrance, she looked up and saw Blake.

“Sir, you’re back!”

She did not even know when Blake had gone out that morning.
