Prologue

It's unnerving how easily life could be turned completely upside down. Literally anything albeit big or small could set things off into a tailspin. The scary thing is that it may happen at any time. My life changing event occurred when I was a baby. It was a summers day like any other. Beautiful and sunny, not a grey cloud to be seen. However, no one could’ve foreseen what was about to happen when night fell…Maggie McKenzie walked into the nursery, carrying her sleeping daughter in her arms. She carefully laid Lena down in the crib. “Goodnight my angel”, Maggie said quietly and pressed a gentle kiss on Lena’s forehead. She gave her daughter one last smile before she left the nursery. Maggie walked down the stairs but as she neared the bottom step, she noticed a red symbol glowing brightly on the window. “No”, she breathed. She darted down the remaining s

20 years later

Lena settled back onto her bed and picked up where she left off in her book. She had literally gotten to the part where Harry had received his letter to Hogwarts when the door to her room opened again and this time it was eighteen year old Dawn Smith who bounced into the room.“Do you mind if I hide out here?” she asked, pushing the door shut “the other girls in my dorm are having this…ugh…slumber party” she made a face “and I don’t want to be hanging around while they  gossip about boys and braid each other’s hair”.“Of course you can stay”, Lena said, knowing how much Dawn hated all things girly. She was very much a tomboy and it showed in her dyed hair, clothes and scuffed combat boots. Her friendship with the eighteen year old was one that had been highly unexpected. It was only through the budd

The Hook Man

In the days that passed, Dawn spent it in a caffeinated haze as she desperately searched the internet for anything to do with the Hook Man legends. She just had to know if this is what they were dealing with since Casey claimed to not see the killer. The details of Bryce’s death did seem to fit with the Hook Man. “Holy crap”, she breathed as she read about Mathew Drummond, the murderer who’d escaped a prison in the Sixties. A prison that wasn’t too far from Cranmoore College. Drummond’s weapon of choice, a hook. With a bit more investigating, she discovered that hunt for Drummond came to a head at Lovers Lane of all places. “Curiouser and curiouser”, she murmured as she scrolled down the page to read that the killer had been shot fleeing the police and died under the tree Bryce was hung from.Dawn sat back and thought about what she had just learned. All these details,

Tyler's revenge continues

Numb. That’s what Casey felt as she sat in the back of the ambulance, blanket wrapped tightly around her. She couldn’t believe that Shawna was dead. “She didn’t deserve it”, the blonde whispered, dropping her head onto Lena’s shoulder.“No, she didn’t”, Lena agreed. Her eyes flickered blue as she quietly uttered the comfort spell, just like she did the other day.The little incantation did the trick as it allowed Casey to explain what happened to the Sherriff without breaking down into tears. It wasn’t long before the Principle came and whisked his daughter away. Before she went, Lena promised that she would stop by the house as soon as she could. Casey gave her a smile, grateful for the brunette’s support. The moment that Shawna’s body was removed from the building, Lena was allowed back inside. However, she wasn’

Stopping the Hook Man

Lena walked with Casey and Dawn to where a small stage had been set up on a patch of grass near the dorms. Principle Grant was holding a candlelight vigil to honour both Bryce and Shawna and to mark the end of a dark chapter in Cranmoore’s history. She watched as a middle aged man got up onto the stage. The teachers then went around, lighting everyone’s white candles. “Students, members of staff. This has been a very difficult time for all of us. Bryce Martin and Shawna Davis were taken from this world far too soon” Lena took hold of Casey’s hand, gripping it tightly “but they can rest in peace knowing the person responsible was caught. For the rest of us, we have closure. This vigil is to honour those we’ve lost and to mark the end of a dark time” the Principle took a sip of water “from this moment on we will be moving forward toward a better and brighter future. A future in which all o

Laying Shawna to rest

It was about a week after her date when Lena was leaving Cranmoore College for spring break. It should have been an exciting time, two weeks of r and r and catching up with her godmother. Instead Lena was going to be attending Shawna’s funeral. She supposed that it was a good thing that her friends parents was finally burying their daughter. If nothing else it’ll give everyone the closure they so desperately needed.“Thinking about the funeral?” Dawn asked, breaking through Lena’s thoughts.“Yeah I am”, Lena admitted “it’s going to be so hard Dawnie”, she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.“I know”, the young witch said softly putting her arms around the brunette, hugging her “I know”. The twenty one year old buried her face in her neck, allowing tears to fall. Dawn rubbed Lena’s back as the br

Unscheduled family reunion

Compared to the car journey into Illinois, the car ride out of the state was far more enjoyable. Lena was happier, engaging Dawn in conversation, telling her all about her godmother Lillian. “You’re going to love Aunty Lily, Dawnie”, the brunette said, barely containing her excitement “she’s the coolest woman I know”. The eighteen year old listened with mild interest as Lena then launched into tale after tale of her life with Lillian frompillow fights to water balloon wars to accidently making a cake explode in the oven. Dawn chuckled at the amusing parts of the twenty one year old’s stories, glad to have this as a distraction from her half-brother’s unexpected appearance at the diner.“She does sound pretty amazing”, the young witch agreed, though she couldn’t help feel a small bubble of jealousy. Lena had this nice, loving person who took care of h

Truths revealed

The next few days saw Lena and Dawn getting even closer, bonding over the most girliest of activities. One day while Lena was doing her nails, the teenager decided to confide in her friend. The brunette paused in stroking the lilac nail polish over her thumb when Dawn mentioned how her family drove her away. “They seriously did that?” she asked, in complete disbelief “no wonder you were so mad at them”.“Still am”, Dawn corrected “I don’t think I could ever forgive them for what they did”.“I don’t blame you”, Lena said. She’d be the exact same way if she was in Dawn’s shoes. The twenty one year old continued painting her nails while Dawn selected a colour for her own fingers and toes.“You know that colour really does suit you”, she remarked, shaking the bottle of metallic

The Green Man of Edenvale

Lena screamed as she fell through the red haze, flashes of her memories whizzing past her. The witch landed with a thump onto the carpet of her parents bedroom. She hauled herself to her feet, coming face to face with her infant-self laying on the bed, wrapped in her baby blanket. This is the night my parents died she thought how am I here? Suddenly she heard screams coming from downstairs. Lena whirled around, rushed out of the room and down the stairs. She didn’t even reach the bottom step before a scream escaped from her lips as she witnessed the brutal deaths of her parents by several shadowy figures. The twenty one year old stood there completely frozen to the spot, unable to move. “This is your mother’s fault”, came the voice that had lured her away “she could’ve saved herself and her husband with black magic but she
