Prologue

When I was ten years old, a drunk driver crashed into my father’s car. They said it was so bad people had a hard time telling where the drunk’s car ended and my father’s began. Dad died instantly, and Mom was devastated. For a while, I thought I might lose her too.Eventually, Mom got better, w

Chapter 1

Just one more year. Just one more year, I told myself as I dressed. It wasn't really even that long. School was only ten months. My stomach tightened. Ten months was still a hell of a lot of time. I took a slow breath, trying to calm my nerves. The bruises had finally gone and nothing hurt, but that would change after today. Just one more year, I told myself again. One more year and I would finish high school and leave for California, never to deal with werewolves again. With an ‘I’m totally fine and happy?’ smile, I left my room and went downstairs to the kitchen.“Morning Baby,” Mom said, smiling from over her shoulder. “Can you believe it? Senior!”This time when I smiled it was real. “I know right!” I sat down and propped my chin on my

Chapter 2

Trying to outrun a werewolf was impossible for a human. I know. I had tried outrunning Mike several times before that little fact dawned on me. So when I raced out of class, I aimed for the busier halls to the nearest girls’ bathroom.Since today was being rather nasty I decided to be extra safe. I picke

Chapter 4

I looked at the school with a scowl. Even though I was running late, I couldn’t bring myself to go inside. I didn’t want to deal with Dean the Superman-wannabe. I couldn’t allow him to interfere with my status quo. He would ruin everything. My scowl deepened. Why didn’t Mom let me stay home? She was callous and downright neglectful when I told her I was sick this morning. Not only did she send me to school despite that I practically begged to stay home, she even went so far to claim if I felt too bad I could go to the nurse.

Chapter 5

I didn’t stop running until my lungs felt like they would implode. I dropped to my knees, panting heavily and waiting for the black spots to disappear. My mind wouldn’t stop replaying the conversation with Mike over and over. Did Harry know what the alpha had planned? I stared up into the cloudless sky through the trees. No, he couldn’t know. Harry was a good person, despite being a werewolf. He’d never allow Dean to be framed to start some stupid war.

Chapter 6

I looked at the sunlight filtering through the tree limbs. The numbness brought on by the Jack Daniels was gone. Now I was stiff with a damp ass. Damn, why didn’t I notice the ground was wet when I sat down? Standing, I stretched all the kinks out. I wondered if Missy ever got out of the woods. I meant to tell her the way she needed to go, but the look of pure horrified shock on her face was hilarious. Did she think Dad would let her just walk away?

Chapter 7

I sat on my bed, legs bent and my arms resting on my knees. Mom lectured me for nearly an hour before she let me go to my room. There was a moment I thought of telling her everything and part of me really wanted to, but I couldn’t. Despite all that had happened so far, it didn't change the fact that Mom needed Harry. Knowing the truth would force her to choose between us.

Chapter 8

Mike recovered faster than I expected and I had only managed to run halfway down the hallway when he grabbed me. He snatched the back of my hoodie and swung me around, throwing me face first into the lockers. Pain exploded in my head and my vision went white. When color and shapes bled into the white, I realized I

Chapter 9

I filled my suitcase and backpack until each was ready to burst and wrote Harry and Mom a quick note. Leaving it on the bed, I put on the backpack and dragged the suitcase to the window. I crawled out, dropping the suitcase to the ground, then climbed down the lattice, trying to ignore the way the world wanted to blur or tilt to the side. Borrowing Mom’s old Chevy, I backed out of the driveway.
