Chapter 16

Auteur: Mu Han
Yvonne raised her chin and spoke into Damon's face mere inches from her, "You can check the CCTV, Mr. Brown. You'll find that I have only just arrived, and I heard nothing."

Damon Brown said nothing and the strength from his hand did not falter. Through his suit, Yvonne could feel his muscles tensing like a tiger ready to spring.

"If there was anything I heard, that would only be the name 'Mitchell Cook'. I major in AI, and I know Atlantis Corporations has just recently launched their self-driving vehicle. That is why I stopped momentarily when I heard the name of Atlantis' president and did not manage to move away..."

Damon's lips twisted into a sneer. "I did mention Mitchell Cook all right. But that's only because we have business dealings. So, does that disappoint you, Ms. York, for failing to get the information you seek?"

Yvonne had barely any interest in the cooperation between Atlantis and Olympus. Rather, her mind was on the approaching footsteps coming from behind.

Damon hissed gloatingly, his voice more sinister than ever, "They are coming; my mother and Erick among them."

Yvonne's pupils contracted with horror.

"What do you think will happen," he grinned with a pitiless jeer and said, "when my mother sees the same woman who is my nephew's girlfriend seducing me after an intimate dance?"

As he hoped, the woman nestled in his arms began trembling. "Even if the woman had once saved her before," he went on, "I daresay my mother would never allow her to be one of us."

Yvonne balled her hands into fists and she stared defiantly at Damon, "So you want to drive me away? That's your purpose, is it?"

"Yes," the one-syllable reply came like the final nail on a coffin. His hand released Yvonne's chin and slide through her hair to the back of her head, pulling her head firmly towards his to kiss her.

The cascades of footfalls from the other end of the garden came closer and closer and in just seconds, they would reach the corner and see them both!

Yvonne felt a knot tying in her chest and a chill sweeping through her veins.

Despair laid ahead; she would lose everything and everyone.

In barely one minute, Old Lady Brown would see everything, and she would lose her one last opportunity for revenge: House Brown.

And some time after that, she would be captured by her father, Miles York or the henchmen of the evil Nicholas Ward, to be offered to the latter as a slave.

She might survive. She might even be able to achieve her revenge in the end. Yet there was no telling what horrors she would be subjected to before that.

Yvonne felt herself struggling in the middle of a maelstrom of emotions as she stared deeply into the eyes of the man before her.

He was powerful and strong. With just a simple flick of his finger, he could destroy every shred of effort. No matter how hard she tried, no matter how careful she was, nothing would make any difference.

Hate, dissatisfaction, and humiliation swirled in her eyes. In the next ten seconds, Yvonne had never forced herself so greatly before.

"Please, please, Mr. Brown," she bit hard as she forced her lips to utter the words with reluctance and difficulty.

He shuddered. In Noelle York's eyes, he saw a look that reminded him of someone from a distant past. "That woman..."

Damon Brown remained unfazed and Yvonne brought herself to squeak again, "Please, Mr. Brown."

"I beg you."

Tears welled up in her eyes. She could only do so much to prevent them from streaming out, returning a burning, and belligerent stare back at Damon Brown pallid sockets.

The footsteps were coming from right around the corner. Yvonne took a deep breath, her eyes closing slowly. In less than five seconds, everything would crumble to dust.

Yet, Damon felt a sting in his heart at the sight of her in despair. He released her and left only a curt message as he spun to leave, "Don't ever let me catch you repeating this! You know the consequences!"

With a truculent glare at his leaving back, she asked, "The Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela. Have you read it before?"

Damon turned back to look at her, his gaze inexplicably dark.

Boldly, Yvonne recited, "A man can be as insignificant as dust, but not as distorted as a maggot."

There was an excerpt in the book that she loved in particular.

"If dawn fails to come, you can live in the dark;

If your voice is dangerous, then keep your silence;

If you are too weak to shine, don’t brighten others;

But...

Do not defend darkness because you are used to it;

Do not be proud of your cynicism;

Do not laugh at those who are more courageous and passionate than you;

A man can be as insignificant as dust, but not as distorted as a maggot."

Damon Brown felt something churning in his mind. His fists involuntarily clenched tightly as his mind lurched with nostalgia at a distant memory, long forgotten, rearing its head.

"She said something like this before. That woman... The Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela. Have you read it before? That's what she said before...

"And yet... Noelle York... He felt himself trembling. Third time. This is the third time she gave me this sensation.

"How she looked when I saw her at the lab, that was the first time;

"Then, the look she gave me just now, that's the second;

"Then this. The excerpt from the Mandela book. The exact same that she recited before."

Yvonne's purpose of reciting Mandela's quote was to give Damon her assurance of her integrity; that she might have hailed from relatively lowly birth, but she would never be unscrupulous and sneaky deceits.

"But, what coincidence is this?!

"And she dared to eavesdrop on my phone call. If she had been someone else, she would have been dead a long time ago!"

"Yet why?" A voice asked inside. Was it all because of that surrealistic and wistful sensation?

A tinge of sadness seeped into Damon's heart as he reminisced about the woman's death.

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 51

Anger burned in her chest, but logic and rationality helped her to suppress her rage.She hardly feared death. But she knew it was the last thing she should seek. Not so much as to avenge her parents, but she needed to save her brother and also Ariel Norman, who had been missing for so long.She must live on, even if it meant enduring more humiliation.Yvonne looked at Damon. With a soft voice bordering on pleading, she spoke, "Then tell me, do I have any other options? I will do my best to achieve it with everything I have."For a fleeting moment, she wondered if she was seeing things. The corners of Damon's eyes twitched, which was an inexplicable charming and frivolous gesture, which appeared on his darkened silhouette.His voice resounded once more, nonchalant and yet alluring to her, "I only believe in two kinds of people. One, dead people who won't ever speak; and the other–"He lowered his voice as his breath meshed with hers, "–those that belong to me."That stunned Yvon

The air in the corridor seemed to be sucked away by the mere presence of Damon Brown as he drew closer. With each step he took, the air grew thinner and thinner, so much so that one could hardly breathe.She seemed even shorter in her bare feet and when she saw him towering over her, her heart plummeted in fear.Knowing full well what he was capable of, Yvonne knew that murdering someone to prevent secrets from being leaked out was not beneath the merciless Damon Brown.Judging by their expressions, they must have been discussing something very important; much more important in fact, than compared to the mention of Mitchell Cook's name she inadvertently overheard when Damon was on the phone.Yvonne could have sworn that she caught the unmistakable fetor of blood as Damon approached her. It was only then she realized that it was actually a small damp patch of blood that made her slip and almost fall. His blood.Her throat suddenly became dry and her voice came out with great diffic

Being in Damon Brown's residence, Yvonne knew she needed to keep her suspicions to herself.Damon and everyone else did not appear for lunch. For the entire day until the evening, they were absent, leaving Yvonne wondering if they had gone out or were they simply too busy. She had dinner and decided to go out for a while."Is he still busy?" She moped quietly. The date of the robotics competition was nearing and her two-day absence would inevitably hamper her team's progress.The final slivers of sunlight sank into the horizon and darkness blanketed the sky. Yvonne strolled near the flowerbeds by the side of the estate's gate and saw to her surprise, a three-colored pansy blooming gloriously.With nothing else to do, she knelt and took out her phone to take a picture of it. It was then she heard the sounds of several cars racing from afar and screeching to a halt.She frowned as she looked up and saw the headlamps of the approaching vehicles and she quickly ducked into a dark corn

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 48

Yvonne could still remember when they were working together on the self-driving vehicle project; how the prodigal son Sully had dismantled the new car that his father had given to him, just so that he could study in detail the whole braking system.One of their teammates, a middle-aged breadwinner, grimaced and groaned about how Sully should have dismantled a cheaper car.Yet, Sully made the most out of the experience. In return for wrecking his own car, what he learned allowed the entire team to greatly improve their work efficiency.Yvonne looked slightly bewildered at her past catching up with her.An itchy-fingered Sully could not hold himself back any longer. With a silly grin, he cried, "Wow, you're great, girl! A fellow grease-monkey!"Yvonne felt a lump in her throat, her voice stifled by the flurry of memories of the times of their late-night hours together. "Together?" she asked indicatively.Beside them, Kyle Pegg did not need to be asked twice. He was already taking o

Then she recalled Damon working till late at night, even while battling a fever and the notion sent a sweeping chill through her."What is he actually?" she wondered.It was conceivable to guess that if the scandal was indeed proven to be true, their winning of the tender would be revoked and Damon would be able to secure it again. It was like taking revenge without tainting his blade with blood.Even with her cursory understanding of the man, Yvonne was certain that her guess was as good as the truth itself. Even if she was mistaken, Damon Brown could just as easily fabricate some proof to checkmate his enemies!"Have I provoked a monster that I shouldn't have?" Yvonne thought, wondering if she should put as much distance between Damon and herself as possible...What sounded like the rumble of an engine drew nearer, then she heard the voices of men talking.Suddenly she recognized one of the voices; it was a voice that made her sit up straight!She rushed out from under the sha

"Hmph. After being so badly injured and having spent such a long time in the water, he should be resting. Serves him right for having a meeting so late in the night."Yvonne sneered quietly to herself, feeling glad for some good news to go to bed with.She woke up to a bright morning the next day and changed into the new clothes that the servants had prepared for her before sitting quietly on the bed, trying to listen for any sounds from outside.Only, nothing could be heard. Everything was so silent outside that she could not even hear the patter of footsteps.She opened the door quietly and peeked out. Finding the door next to her room tightly shut, she walked down the stairs to the sitting room.The servants busy scurrying about in the kitchen saw her and politely greeted her, "Good morning, Ms. York. Breakfast shall be served right away.""Thank you," she said to them.One of the servants remembered something. She went out and returned with a little bag. "Ms. York," she said

It could only be surmised that this was one of Damon's private estates, for the same steely atmosphere emanated from every corner of the ranch estate.Almost every available room in the estate was adequately furnished without any excess furniture and that left quite a lot of empty spaces.She walk

Help came in less than a half-hour. They were Damon's men and Yvonne never expected them to be so quick.The rumbles of a helicopter's rotor from afar grew steadily louder overhead, swelling to a roaring crescendo as it drew nearer. Moments later, men appeared, surrounding them and when they saw Da

He could sense the softness of her touch through the thin layer of clothing and it was a tingly-cold sensation.Yvonne found the tools and quickly retrieved them, all this while avoiding his gaze and said, "I'll try."It was about three or four o'clock in the afternoon. Shafts of light from the su

"Give me time," he breathed into Yvonne's ear.Bare-chested, he leaned against her. She was still in her skirt, but she was wet, and the close proximity allowed her to sense the heat emanating from the man's body. Even more so, she closely felt the touch of a person of the opposite gender.Her for
