Chapter 15

Penulis: Mu Han
It took the three girls for Yvonne to leave the restroom before they could react, albeit with much chagrin and annoyance.

"Dammit, what arrogance!"

"Yeah, 'dumping Erick'? As if she's qualified to, with the likes of her!"

"Yeah, she should be feeling proud and honored if Erick decides to dump her! Just who does she think she is!"

"Screw this! We must come up with a plan to deal with her, Elmina!"

As the trio of girls set about their insidious plans, Yvonne made her way back to the hall.

Having fulfilled her purpose, she thought it was time she left.

She said her farewells to Old Lady Brown and left a message to Erick to inform him of her departure, before she strode straight out of the ballroom.

Night had come in full sheets of darkness outside, and she needed to traverse a small garden to get to the main road from the ballroom of the House Brown residence. She padded on the soft grass, making her way through the lawn. She had just passed right around the corner when she heard someone speaking on the phone.

Yvonne ignored the voice and kept her pace until she heard a name being mentioned and she froze!

"What else did Mitchell Cook say?" A deep male voice rumbled in the darkness.

Yvonne remained motionless, anxiously holding her breath.

"Mitchell Cook!" The name that she would never forget and nor forgive for the rest of her life!

She hoped to hear more, but the male voice hushed down. The man quickly ended his call and began moving in piecemeal steps towards her.

He stepped out of the shadows and into the moonlight, his angular features looking more prominent in the gossamer glow and his eyes exuding a scalding cold that Yvonne had never seen before in anyone else!

Not even her experience of death before could stop her from shaking at the aura of malice and viciousness that poured from the very being of the Devil's very own incarnation.

He came to a halt before her, his eyes a pair of swirling abysses shining in the dark that Yvonne could not pull herself away from.

Even with her high-heels, he lumbered over her, giving off a suffocating sense of pressure.

With the air around her completely sucked dry, she felt even more afraid.

All the sinister rumors about Damon Brown now filling her mind only made Yvonne's heart thump faster. Struggling to keep her voice calm, she said, "I, I did not know you were speaking on the phone here, Mr. Brown... I, I..."

The moon peered out from the midst of the clouds up above, but with the thick and tall canopy of leafy branches shielding them, only mere slivers of moonlight trickled through.

Damon Brown placed a hand on Yvonne's shoulder, pinning her to a wall. In a still and steely voice, he breathed, "But I don't seem to recall you making any indication of excusing yourself, no?"

His warm breath caressed her head as he spoke. Only, Yvonne felt only cold fear instead of heat.

"Mr. Brown," she squeaked, "I was surprised, that was why I failed to react and move elsewhere."

He ignored her, locking her in a gaze that she could not break. "Tell me," he hissed, "what are your motives for fawning upon House Brown?"

Yvonne shook her head, understanding at last that she must have unknowingly stumbled upon an unknown secret of House Brown that they wished to remain hidden.

"And Damon Brown is going to kill me for me!"

Before she could protest, Damon Brown held her chin, squeezing it gently as he lifted her head.

His head lowered, drawing nearer towards her.

Their lips were but no more than a finger apart; so close they were to each other that she could smell the growing aroma of alcohol from the liquor he drank just now.

His piercing stare burrowed through her as he spoke, whispering like a lover; however, his words, as cold as ice, sliced through her like a blade. "Whatever reasons you have for creeping up to House Brown, remember that so long as I remain, I shall tolerate nothing of your schemes."

"But, but I have no..." Yvonne tried to explain herself before she was interrupted by Damon Brown's movements.

His other hand cupped her waist, pulling her to him that they stuck to each other like glue.

She had never been in love before; Mitchell Cook's courtship of her in her former lifetime felt more like the love between siblings.

When Mitchell Cook had proposed to her, much to her father's joy and agreement, she did have her doubts.

But she listened to them, trusting in their advice that a woman should marry a man who understood her and that one needed not to pursue the most majestic love affair but only a peaceful and happy life with loved ones.

Mitchell Cook had always been with her throughout her entire life, and hence, she accepted the proposal.

Despite their engagement, there was little courtship between them; she kept Mitchell at a distance even though he wanted intimacy that they barely held hands, never mind hugging and kissing.

Restiveness and unease crept into Yvonne as Damon closed in on her. She tried to push him away but to no avail. The man was a mountain.

They might be away from the ballroom, but people might come by and see them...

In a cruel stroke of fate, the approaching footfalls that Yvonne dreaded really came, portending the presence of not one, but several people coming their way.

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 51

Anger burned in her chest, but logic and rationality helped her to suppress her rage. She hardly feared death. But she knew it was the last thing she should seek. Not so much as to avenge her parents, but she needed to save her brother and also Ariel Norman, who had been missing for so long. She must live on, even if it meant enduring more humiliation.Yvonne looked at Damon. With a soft voice bordering on pleading, she spoke, "Then tell me, do I have any other options? I will do my best to achieve it with everything I have."For a fleeting moment, she wondered if she was seeing things. The corners of Damon's eyes twitched, which was an inexplicable charming and frivolous gesture, which appeared on his darkened silhouette. His voice resounded once more, nonchalant and yet alluring to her, "I only believe in two kinds of people. One, dead people who won't ever speak; and the other–"He lowered his voice as his breath meshed with hers, "–those that belong to me."That stunned Yvon

The air in the corridor seemed to be sucked away by the mere presence of Damon Brown as he drew closer. With each step he took, the air grew thinner and thinner, so much so that one could hardly breathe. She seemed even shorter in her bare feet and when she saw him towering over her, her heart plummeted in fear.Knowing full well what he was capable of, Yvonne knew that murdering someone to prevent secrets from being leaked out was not beneath the merciless Damon Brown.Judging by their expressions, they must have been discussing something very important; much more important in fact, than compared to the mention of Mitchell Cook's name she inadvertently overheard when Damon was on the phone.Yvonne could have sworn that she caught the unmistakable fetor of blood as Damon approached her. It was only then she realized that it was actually a small damp patch of blood that made her slip and almost fall. His blood. Her throat suddenly became dry and her voice came out with great diffic

Being in Damon Brown's residence, Yvonne knew she needed to keep her suspicions to herself.Damon and everyone else did not appear for lunch. For the entire day until the evening, they were absent, leaving Yvonne wondering if they had gone out or were they simply too busy. She had dinner and decided to go out for a while."Is he still busy?" She moped quietly. The date of the robotics competition was nearing and her two-day absence would inevitably hamper her team's progress. The final slivers of sunlight sank into the horizon and darkness blanketed the sky. Yvonne strolled near the flowerbeds by the side of the estate's gate and saw to her surprise, a three-colored pansy blooming gloriously. With nothing else to do, she knelt and took out her phone to take a picture of it. It was then she heard the sounds of several cars racing from afar and screeching to a halt. She frowned as she looked up and saw the headlamps of the approaching vehicles and she quickly ducked into a dark corn

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 48

Yvonne could still remember when they were working together on the self-driving vehicle project; how the prodigal son Sully had dismantled the new car that his father had given to him, just so that he could study in detail the whole braking system. One of their teammates, a middle-aged breadwinner, grimaced and groaned about how Sully should have dismantled a cheaper car.Yet, Sully made the most out of the experience. In return for wrecking his own car, what he learned allowed the entire team to greatly improve their work efficiency.Yvonne looked slightly bewildered at her past catching up with her.An itchy-fingered Sully could not hold himself back any longer. With a silly grin, he cried, "Wow, you're great, girl! A fellow grease-monkey!"Yvonne felt a lump in her throat, her voice stifled by the flurry of memories of the times of their late-night hours together. "Together?" she asked indicatively.Beside them, Kyle Pegg did not need to be asked twice. He was already taking o

Then she recalled Damon working till late at night, even while battling a fever and the notion sent a sweeping chill through her."What is he actually?" she wondered. It was conceivable to guess that if the scandal was indeed proven to be true, their winning of the tender would be revoked and Damon would be able to secure it again. It was like taking revenge without tainting his blade with blood.Even with her cursory understanding of the man, Yvonne was certain that her guess was as good as the truth itself. Even if she was mistaken, Damon Brown could just as easily fabricate some proof to checkmate his enemies!"Have I provoked a monster that I shouldn't have?" Yvonne thought, wondering if she should put as much distance between Damon and herself as possible...What sounded like the rumble of an engine drew nearer, then she heard the voices of men talking.Suddenly she recognized one of the voices; it was a voice that made her sit up straight! She rushed out from under the sha

"Hmph. After being so badly injured and having spent such a long time in the water, he should be resting. Serves him right for having a meeting so late in the night."Yvonne sneered quietly to herself, feeling glad for some good news to go to bed with. She woke up to a bright morning the next day and changed into the new clothes that the servants had prepared for her before sitting quietly on the bed, trying to listen for any sounds from outside.Only, nothing could be heard. Everything was so silent outside that she could not even hear the patter of footsteps. She opened the door quietly and peeked out. Finding the door next to her room tightly shut, she walked down the stairs to the sitting room. The servants busy scurrying about in the kitchen saw her and politely greeted her, "Good morning, Ms. York. Breakfast shall be served right away.""Thank you," she said to them. One of the servants remembered something. She went out and returned with a little bag. "Ms. York," she said

It could only be surmised that this was one of Damon's private estates, for the same steely atmosphere emanated from every corner of the ranch estate.Almost every available room in the estate was adequately furnished without any excess furniture and that left quite a lot of empty spaces. She walk

Help came in less than a half-hour. They were Damon's men and Yvonne never expected them to be so quick. The rumbles of a helicopter's rotor from afar grew steadily louder overhead, swelling to a roaring crescendo as it drew nearer. Moments later, men appeared, surrounding them and when they saw Da

He could sense the softness of her touch through the thin layer of clothing and it was a tingly-cold sensation.Yvonne found the tools and quickly retrieved them, all this while avoiding his gaze and said, "I'll try."It was about three or four o'clock in the afternoon. Shafts of light from the su

"Give me time," he breathed into Yvonne's ear.Bare-chested, he leaned against her. She was still in her skirt, but she was wet, and the close proximity allowed her to sense the heat emanating from the man's body. Even more so, she closely felt the touch of a person of the opposite gender. Her for
