Chapter 13

Author: Mu Han
Yvonne stepped into the great hall, her senses stirring at the nostalgic thrill of extravagance and luxury that once had been a regular experience to her in her former lifetime.

Scores of people drew closer to Erick, hoping to engage him in conversation and he perfunctorily introduced Yvonne to every guest who managed to garner his attention.

Just then, the entire hall fell silent suddenly.

A man, dressed in a smart suit, strolled slowly towards them from the entrance of the hall.

Tall and strong, beautiful and yet dashing, the man walked with an immaculate presence of authority and power that swept the entire ball off its feet.

Damon Brown.

There was not a person in the great hall who did not look his way the moment he stepped inside.

Most, if not all, of the guests that attended the ball tonight were here because of him. Eager to speak to him, they craned their necks in anticipation as he meandered by, yet no one dared to approach him because of his staggering presence.

Damon Brown walked slowly. With every step, he carried purpose and weight, his eyes locked ahead of him. Only when he passed by Yvonne did his gaze drift by her faintly, lingering for only a brief moment.

A moment that seemed to carry some unknown significance.

Stupefied for a brief beat, when Yvonne regained her senses, Damon Brown had reached his mother, Old Lady Brown.

Erick pointed to a secluded corner and muttered, "Stay here. I'll send for you if I need anything."

He left her side brusquely, with not so much as a look back at her.

Hardly perturbed by the cold shoulder herself, Yvonne got herself some pastries in front of her and sat down on an empty couch, nibbling to fill her empty stomach.

Then she heard people approaching, speaking hushedly as they came near.

"I admit, we have been too hasty with the Mt. Swallowpeak project. I implore you for a second chance, please?" A man begged Damon Brown reverently.

"You had one chance. It's gone now." Damon Brown hissed placidly, hardly interested in prolonging the conversation.

The man begged and begged, but it was futile, and he left disappointed and dejected moments after.

More people began to notice Damon Brown's presence and they buzzed around him like wasps around a jar of honey.

These people had spent a great deal of money to procure themselves the invitation to this ball and it was all to meet Damon Brown personally. Any one piece of scrap from Damon Brown's table would be enough for them to last for a couple of years.

But Damon Brown pressed on undeterred, obviously accustomed to such bother and made a bee-line to the secluded corner where the clusters of sofas were. He was sitting down when he finally noticed Yvonne's presence.

She was biting on her food, her fresh and spry features now missing its former mystique. If anything, he found her eating appearance rather adorable.

His eyes squinted with mild interest.

Yvonne was just looking up from her plate when she saw Damon Brown settling down. She scrambled to her feet and yelped, "Er... Hi, Mr. Brown!"

Seeing the retinue of men huddling after him, she slithered away, knowing that the men wished to talk business.

Only, Damon Brown had the least interest in listening to any of the proposals the guests were saying. Instead, he watched Yvonne's leaving back with fascination.

He had kept tabs on his nephew when he heard about somebody actively pursuing Erick.

Only, the Noelle York that he knew was a stark contrast to the Noelle York recently. She looked wholly different; not only her make-up and appearance, but even her temperament and disposition as well.

The Noelle York he knew was nothing if not indecisive and wishy-washy, he brooded and wondered, "But the Noelle York today..."

"This woman is skilled in pretending," Damon Brown thought, "Erick shouldn't even be her target."

"So, what is her purpose for skulking near House Brown?"

"Was it because of that? That particular incident?"

In no time, the ball opened, and the opening dance naturally begun by members of House Brown.

Damon Brown stood alone, having brought no female companion with him. In fact, even as he neared thirty years of age, he had never been rumored to have any woman in his life before.

For that very reason, Old Lady Brown nodded to Erick and Yvonne to open the dance.

Only, the notes of the music rose and Erick remained missing. Old Lady Brown waved for a servant, about to ask him to seek out Erick when Damon suddenly spoke, "Allow me."

He walked up to Yvonne and graced her with an invitation to dance.

She looked into his eyes, a pair of dark, bottomless orbs that flashed captivatingly in the ambiance of the lights flaring overhead. Yvonne could not quite believe what happened. Damon Brown invited her to a dance?!

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 51

Anger burned in her chest, but logic and rationality helped her to suppress her rage. She hardly feared death. But she knew it was the last thing she should seek. Not so much as to avenge her parents, but she needed to save her brother and also Ariel Norman, who had been missing for so long. She must live on, even if it meant enduring more humiliation.Yvonne looked at Damon. With a soft voice bordering on pleading, she spoke, "Then tell me, do I have any other options? I will do my best to achieve it with everything I have."For a fleeting moment, she wondered if she was seeing things. The corners of Damon's eyes twitched, which was an inexplicable charming and frivolous gesture, which appeared on his darkened silhouette. His voice resounded once more, nonchalant and yet alluring to her, "I only believe in two kinds of people. One, dead people who won't ever speak; and the other–"He lowered his voice as his breath meshed with hers, "–those that belong to me."That stunned Yvon

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 50

The air in the corridor seemed to be sucked away by the mere presence of Damon Brown as he drew closer. With each step he took, the air grew thinner and thinner, so much so that one could hardly breathe. She seemed even shorter in her bare feet and when she saw him towering over her, her heart plummeted in fear.Knowing full well what he was capable of, Yvonne knew that murdering someone to prevent secrets from being leaked out was not beneath the merciless Damon Brown.Judging by their expressions, they must have been discussing something very important; much more important in fact, than compared to the mention of Mitchell Cook's name she inadvertently overheard when Damon was on the phone.Yvonne could have sworn that she caught the unmistakable fetor of blood as Damon approached her. It was only then she realized that it was actually a small damp patch of blood that made her slip and almost fall. His blood. Her throat suddenly became dry and her voice came out with great diffic

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 49

Being in Damon Brown's residence, Yvonne knew she needed to keep her suspicions to herself.Damon and everyone else did not appear for lunch. For the entire day until the evening, they were absent, leaving Yvonne wondering if they had gone out or were they simply too busy. She had dinner and decided to go out for a while."Is he still busy?" She moped quietly. The date of the robotics competition was nearing and her two-day absence would inevitably hamper her team's progress. The final slivers of sunlight sank into the horizon and darkness blanketed the sky. Yvonne strolled near the flowerbeds by the side of the estate's gate and saw to her surprise, a three-colored pansy blooming gloriously. With nothing else to do, she knelt and took out her phone to take a picture of it. It was then she heard the sounds of several cars racing from afar and screeching to a halt. She frowned as she looked up and saw the headlamps of the approaching vehicles and she quickly ducked into a dark corn

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 48

Yvonne could still remember when they were working together on the self-driving vehicle project; how the prodigal son Sully had dismantled the new car that his father had given to him, just so that he could study in detail the whole braking system. One of their teammates, a middle-aged breadwinner, grimaced and groaned about how Sully should have dismantled a cheaper car.Yet, Sully made the most out of the experience. In return for wrecking his own car, what he learned allowed the entire team to greatly improve their work efficiency.Yvonne looked slightly bewildered at her past catching up with her.An itchy-fingered Sully could not hold himself back any longer. With a silly grin, he cried, "Wow, you're great, girl! A fellow grease-monkey!"Yvonne felt a lump in her throat, her voice stifled by the flurry of memories of the times of their late-night hours together. "Together?" she asked indicatively.Beside them, Kyle Pegg did not need to be asked twice. He was already taking o

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 47

Then she recalled Damon working till late at night, even while battling a fever and the notion sent a sweeping chill through her."What is he actually?" she wondered. It was conceivable to guess that if the scandal was indeed proven to be true, their winning of the tender would be revoked and Damon would be able to secure it again. It was like taking revenge without tainting his blade with blood.Even with her cursory understanding of the man, Yvonne was certain that her guess was as good as the truth itself. Even if she was mistaken, Damon Brown could just as easily fabricate some proof to checkmate his enemies!"Have I provoked a monster that I shouldn't have?" Yvonne thought, wondering if she should put as much distance between Damon and herself as possible...What sounded like the rumble of an engine drew nearer, then she heard the voices of men talking.Suddenly she recognized one of the voices; it was a voice that made her sit up straight! She rushed out from under the sha

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 46

"Hmph. After being so badly injured and having spent such a long time in the water, he should be resting. Serves him right for having a meeting so late in the night."Yvonne sneered quietly to herself, feeling glad for some good news to go to bed with. She woke up to a bright morning the next day and changed into the new clothes that the servants had prepared for her before sitting quietly on the bed, trying to listen for any sounds from outside.Only, nothing could be heard. Everything was so silent outside that she could not even hear the patter of footsteps. She opened the door quietly and peeked out. Finding the door next to her room tightly shut, she walked down the stairs to the sitting room. The servants busy scurrying about in the kitchen saw her and politely greeted her, "Good morning, Ms. York. Breakfast shall be served right away.""Thank you," she said to them. One of the servants remembered something. She went out and returned with a little bag. "Ms. York," she said

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 37

Yvonne's face hardened to stone as her senses tingled wildly, although she could not tell from which direction the steel darts came from.As she looked around, hoping to find avenues to escape to safety, Damon vaulted himself to the top of the reef rock. "Elsa," he breathed anxiously, "run! No matt

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 36

Whether or not it was because of the sad memories returning to her that made her vexed, Yvonne could not tell. She turned bitter and needed to let it out of her system. "I hope you're not here to offer me food, Mister Brown, only because you have fallen for me after being moved by my display of affe

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 35

"Hmph, she's not stupid. As if there is another single bachelor whose criteria could be better than our Erick!""But Erick's uncle–"Before he could finish, another voice cut him off. "Damon? Who would dare make advances on him? He has Elsa Gregg, his childhood sweetheart. He'd never look at anoth

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 34

Yvonne immediately understood what Damon was referring to.Looking back at him in the eye, straight and frank, she replied affirmatively, "Yes."Those words came from the genuine heart of Noelle York, without a slight of adulteration.Yvonne knew that Noelle had died the moment when her soul came
