Chapter 12

Author: Mu Han
Beside Damon Brown, Mitchell Cook took notice of Yvonne as well.

Only, before he could take a good look at the face of the girl, his vision was blocked by Damon Brown who walked forward to speak to the Director.

When Damon Brown moved away later, the woman had moved from her previous position into another one that he could not see anymore.

Being here only for some negotiations, Damon Brown and Mitchell Cook did not stay long to finish the tour. Before long, they both left MSRA Labs.

On Sunday afternoon, Yvonne received a package from Erick: a dinner gown.

Yvonne had always found Noelle York to be pretty—a young and youthful sort of pretty. But when she put on the dinner gown and stood in front of a mirror, she could not believe that Noelle York could be ravishingly gorgeous.

The girl in the mirror looked hardly twenty. The features on her ivory fair skin were flawless. Perfect—long, flowing black hair down to her fair shoulders, rosy-red and luscious lips, and a captivating pair of eyes that carried a certain air of mystique. With just a simple look from her, she could be like Medusa, turning any man that looked at her to stone.

Yvonne felt the edges of her lips curling, feeling satisfied with how she looked.

Twenty minutes later, Erick's car came for her.

He was wearing a deep lavender tie; an addition that added a tinge of enigma to the serious staidness of his full black suit.

He strode straight to the restroom and the clicks of his heels alerted to Yvonne of his approach and she wheeled around quickly, their eyes meeting.

Erick Brown stopped, looking positively surprised, clearly not expecting this, although his expression quickly wiped bare, replaced with the usual contempt and disgust he reserved for her.

Still, all the disdain could do little to erase the consternation swelling inside him, "She's only 20, yet this gown seems to fit her perfectly?!"

Together, they came to the manor where the Brown held the ball.

The outside of the manor looked like a supercar motor show with numerous rare and exotic cars parked outside, the paragons of wealth and superfluous as embodied by the guests that graced this function tonight.

As soon as Yvonne stepped down the car, she commanded the attention of every pair of eyes around her.

The elegant cuts of Yvonne's flowing dress of deep garnet showcased the full benefit of her curvaceous figure. Under the shower of the warm lights in the evening, the rich yet evocative color of her gown made her look as if Mona Lisa herself had stepped out of Da Vinci's Renaissance masterpiece, appearing dignified, courtly, and yet, mystifying.

Erick Brown disembarked his car from the other side.

Yvonne gracefully held out her cream-white arm to coil around his and together, wallowing in the attention of the audience, they sauntered casually towards the entrance hall of the manor.

Inscrutable and reserved, youthful and refined—every man and woman they drifted past felt as if they had forgotten how to breathe.

When they finally disappeared out of sight, the silent compound once again broke out into excited whispers and exclamations. "That's Erick's girlfriend?! Damn... she looks way better than her photos in the magazines!"

"Humph, it's rare enough that Erick Brown appears at such functions with female company. You can bet he'd be meticulous in selecting one! Anyone he chooses must either be rich and powerful or enchantingly gorgeous!"

"Indeed, indeed! So young Erick Brown's gonna get married before his uncle, I guess!"

Roving in the midst of the heated discussions blazing all around him, a lone, silent man could not help straightening his back.

Miles York looked so immensely pleased with the prospect of having his daughter married into a family as prestigious as House Brown. He beamed so broadly that one could have thought him as one of the Browns as he ambled amongst the guests with an air of magnitude and pride.

After all, both Damon and Erick of House Brown were the two lone bachelors that were the apples in the eyes of almost every unattached woman in the entire Emperie City.

However, Damon Brown's indomitable position at the peak of the social ladder and ruthless disposition only made him too unreachable, if not impossibly transcendent—reasons which had continually daunted one too many lasses from orbiting anywhere close to him.

But the same could not be said for Erick. Despite looking usually cold and distant, he seemed a more feasible and realistic target for any single girls hoping a quick ride into the upper echelons of the social hierarchy.

Be that as it may, Erick appeared to be a more realistic target only if compared to Damon Brown. Being the most powerful of aristocratic families in the Emperie City, House Brown nevertheless remained but merely a distant fantasy to most people.

As Erick and Yvonne traipsed by, upper-class ladies by the score ogled hungrily at him, even though that was all that they managed to do.

And before anyone knew it, the pair had entered the main hall.

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 51

Anger burned in her chest, but logic and rationality helped her to suppress her rage. She hardly feared death. But she knew it was the last thing she should seek. Not so much as to avenge her parents, but she needed to save her brother and also Ariel Norman, who had been missing for so long. She must live on, even if it meant enduring more humiliation.Yvonne looked at Damon. With a soft voice bordering on pleading, she spoke, "Then tell me, do I have any other options? I will do my best to achieve it with everything I have."For a fleeting moment, she wondered if she was seeing things. The corners of Damon's eyes twitched, which was an inexplicable charming and frivolous gesture, which appeared on his darkened silhouette. His voice resounded once more, nonchalant and yet alluring to her, "I only believe in two kinds of people. One, dead people who won't ever speak; and the other–"He lowered his voice as his breath meshed with hers, "–those that belong to me."That stunned Yvon

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 50

The air in the corridor seemed to be sucked away by the mere presence of Damon Brown as he drew closer. With each step he took, the air grew thinner and thinner, so much so that one could hardly breathe. She seemed even shorter in her bare feet and when she saw him towering over her, her heart plummeted in fear.Knowing full well what he was capable of, Yvonne knew that murdering someone to prevent secrets from being leaked out was not beneath the merciless Damon Brown.Judging by their expressions, they must have been discussing something very important; much more important in fact, than compared to the mention of Mitchell Cook's name she inadvertently overheard when Damon was on the phone.Yvonne could have sworn that she caught the unmistakable fetor of blood as Damon approached her. It was only then she realized that it was actually a small damp patch of blood that made her slip and almost fall. His blood. Her throat suddenly became dry and her voice came out with great diffic

Being in Damon Brown's residence, Yvonne knew she needed to keep her suspicions to herself.Damon and everyone else did not appear for lunch. For the entire day until the evening, they were absent, leaving Yvonne wondering if they had gone out or were they simply too busy. She had dinner and decided to go out for a while."Is he still busy?" She moped quietly. The date of the robotics competition was nearing and her two-day absence would inevitably hamper her team's progress. The final slivers of sunlight sank into the horizon and darkness blanketed the sky. Yvonne strolled near the flowerbeds by the side of the estate's gate and saw to her surprise, a three-colored pansy blooming gloriously. With nothing else to do, she knelt and took out her phone to take a picture of it. It was then she heard the sounds of several cars racing from afar and screeching to a halt. She frowned as she looked up and saw the headlamps of the approaching vehicles and she quickly ducked into a dark corn

The Resurrected Sweetheart   Chapter 48

Yvonne could still remember when they were working together on the self-driving vehicle project; how the prodigal son Sully had dismantled the new car that his father had given to him, just so that he could study in detail the whole braking system. One of their teammates, a middle-aged breadwinner, grimaced and groaned about how Sully should have dismantled a cheaper car.Yet, Sully made the most out of the experience. In return for wrecking his own car, what he learned allowed the entire team to greatly improve their work efficiency.Yvonne looked slightly bewildered at her past catching up with her.An itchy-fingered Sully could not hold himself back any longer. With a silly grin, he cried, "Wow, you're great, girl! A fellow grease-monkey!"Yvonne felt a lump in her throat, her voice stifled by the flurry of memories of the times of their late-night hours together. "Together?" she asked indicatively.Beside them, Kyle Pegg did not need to be asked twice. He was already taking o

Then she recalled Damon working till late at night, even while battling a fever and the notion sent a sweeping chill through her."What is he actually?" she wondered. It was conceivable to guess that if the scandal was indeed proven to be true, their winning of the tender would be revoked and Damon would be able to secure it again. It was like taking revenge without tainting his blade with blood.Even with her cursory understanding of the man, Yvonne was certain that her guess was as good as the truth itself. Even if she was mistaken, Damon Brown could just as easily fabricate some proof to checkmate his enemies!"Have I provoked a monster that I shouldn't have?" Yvonne thought, wondering if she should put as much distance between Damon and herself as possible...What sounded like the rumble of an engine drew nearer, then she heard the voices of men talking.Suddenly she recognized one of the voices; it was a voice that made her sit up straight! She rushed out from under the sha

"Hmph. After being so badly injured and having spent such a long time in the water, he should be resting. Serves him right for having a meeting so late in the night."Yvonne sneered quietly to herself, feeling glad for some good news to go to bed with. She woke up to a bright morning the next day and changed into the new clothes that the servants had prepared for her before sitting quietly on the bed, trying to listen for any sounds from outside.Only, nothing could be heard. Everything was so silent outside that she could not even hear the patter of footsteps. She opened the door quietly and peeked out. Finding the door next to her room tightly shut, she walked down the stairs to the sitting room. The servants busy scurrying about in the kitchen saw her and politely greeted her, "Good morning, Ms. York. Breakfast shall be served right away.""Thank you," she said to them. One of the servants remembered something. She went out and returned with a little bag. "Ms. York," she said

It could only be surmised that this was one of Damon's private estates, for the same steely atmosphere emanated from every corner of the ranch estate.Almost every available room in the estate was adequately furnished without any excess furniture and that left quite a lot of empty spaces. She walk

Help came in less than a half-hour. They were Damon's men and Yvonne never expected them to be so quick. The rumbles of a helicopter's rotor from afar grew steadily louder overhead, swelling to a roaring crescendo as it drew nearer. Moments later, men appeared, surrounding them and when they saw Da

He could sense the softness of her touch through the thin layer of clothing and it was a tingly-cold sensation.Yvonne found the tools and quickly retrieved them, all this while avoiding his gaze and said, "I'll try."It was about three or four o'clock in the afternoon. Shafts of light from the su

"Give me time," he breathed into Yvonne's ear.Bare-chested, he leaned against her. She was still in her skirt, but she was wet, and the close proximity allowed her to sense the heat emanating from the man's body. Even more so, she closely felt the touch of a person of the opposite gender. Her for
