Chapter 2 Why Won’t I Dare To Hit You

Nobody came to visit over the days while Charlotte was hospitalized, but this gave her plenty of time. She went to see the doctor for a full medical assessment.

In her memory, Charlotte used to take medications like they were her main meals. She was dull and lifeless all day, feeling heavy and weak. She wanted to change that thus she needed to know what illness she was suffering from.

The health report showed that Charlotte was in good health. Other than this episode of accidentally tripping down the stairs and knocking her head which led her to experience some cerebral concussions, there were no issues with her health at all.

So what was it about with those unknown medications that she had been taking?

On the day Charlotte was discharged, only the driver came to pick her up. She huffed and puffed as she walked down the stairs which was enough to make her sweat buckets. For someone who used to have a muscular lean body, she was not used to having excessive flesh dangling from her body. That dislike was not limited to her only, even the driver looked down on her.

At the Luther Mansion, Charlotte made her way in. Her stepmother, Suzzane Yale was leisurely sitting in the living room, sipping tea. The fourth daughter, Joanna Luther was sitting nearby flipping a magazine. Joanna looked up to see Charlotte looking all sweaty, and she frowned as she disdainfully said, “What a loathsome fatty.”

Charlotte ignored her and headed for her room upstairs.

“Stand still! Where are your manners? Don’t you need to greet our mother when you arrive home?” Joanna bellowed.

“Mother? Whose mother?” Charlotte replied.

“Of course my mother. Your mother is long dead. You’re an unwanted pig head! A b*stard that has no mother around to nurture!” Joanna mocked.

‘Unwanted’, ‘b*stard’. These were words that Wendy had used upon her. She had never known who her parents were, or why she had grown up under the wings of the Abyss Group. Although she could not do anything to Wendy right now, was she going to let Joanna ride on her head?

Slap! Charlotte gave a tight slap that the flesh on her palms trembled at the force. Charlotte once again felt despair and decided that she needed to shed some weight.

“How dare you hit me? Who are you to hit me?” Joanna covered her cheeks and looked at Charlotte with disbelief. In the past, Charlotte was a total pushover. Joanna had frequently used her as a punching bag and Charlotte would not even dare to whimper. How did Charlotte find the courage to hit her today?

“Why won’t I dare to hit you? Based on our age, I’m your elder sister. Based on birthrights, I’m the daughter born by the legal first wife. As for you, your mother climbed her way up as a mistress, and you’re merely an illegitimate child. Who are you to be so boastful within the Luther household?” Charlotte said every word with conviction.

Joanna was dumbfounded. Charlotte used to be so dull and lifeless as if she was autistic. Since when did Charlotte become so bold to speak up for herself using facts and logic?

Joanna immediately ran over to Suzzane and cried in her arms. “Mommy, look at Charlotte. She dared to hit me...”

Suzanne looked at her youngest with a broken heart. There was a bright red marking of a palm on her cheeks. Suzanne immediately stood up and said, “Charlotte, you’re in the wrong. How could you hit your younger sister so casually?”

“Sister? My mother only gave birth to me. I never knew that I had a sister.” Charlotte retorted.

“Charlotte Luther, don’t go overboard. There is no place for you to speak up in this household! Nobody will look good if the old master caught word of this!” Suzanne reprimanded.

“Very well. I am more than happy to oblige if Madam Yale would like to bring this up to grandpa. I wonder what father would say when he comes home to see that you can’t even handle squabbles between the children and let it blow out of proportion for everyone to hear about it?”

Suzanne hesitated. Old Master Luther was never fond of her as a mistress that made her way up to become a wife. Timothy had always nagged at her to not disturb the old master unnecessarily. After all, Luther Group was still under the control of the old master.

Charlotte noticed that Suzanne remained silent and she said, “Madam Yale, since you have no intentions of bringing the matter up to grandpa at the moment, I shall be returning to my room.”

Without waiting for a reply, Charlotte made her way upstairs. She was the total opposite of her previous respectful and meek self.

Joanna was still throwing a fit. She had been pampered by her parents since the day she was born, never having suffered a tiny bit, yet Charlotte had slapped her? Joanna was not going to let Charlotte off the hook easily!

Suzanne said with a broken heart, “We’ll wait for your father to come back and let him discipline her!”

Only that appeased Joanna.
