CHAPTER FIVE: OH NINEVEH!
Author: Casmir E. CTHREE DAYS AGO IN THE CRYPTS OF BANE
*********************
I feel the grittiness of the white sand beneath my brown feet as I stand shirtless on the Rings of Sand with all my attention focused on my enemy Karen.
The Rings of Sand is where we practice our close combat skills against each other and today my opponent was unavoidably Karen!
Oh heavens! Save me today
.."focus is the key " Al-Ain interrupts my earnest prayer with his cranky voice as he stands on a slightly elevated platform in the dimly lit temple hall and watches the choreography before him.
Yes, it is choreography for him because he enjoys it despite the fact that we break bones, tear muscles and injure blood vessels in this so called training!
I can not see very well in this dimly lit room neither can I perceive even the slightest motions in the dark like all Neems can.
They have a heightened sense of motion especially in the dark and are trained with this so they can be flawless in daytime and this is one of the advantages they have over ordinary men like me.They say I am Neem but the color of my eyes say otherwise and I do not sense in the dark like they do. I neither move like a spirit in combat nor am I as fast nor as strong as my brothers, but somehow I have managed to survive this Den of Hades for years,
..Why?"
"...you look at him and all you see is an animal, a prey waiting to be devoured by you. He is weaker, he is nothing compared to a god like you!" Al-Ain continues.
I try hard to see Karen amidst the darkness as we circle each other slowly on the Rings of Sand with my other brothers standing by the edge of the ring forming a circle around us with their sweaty chests heaving and their voices making a familiar song rhyme with a tempo:
"Hee! Hee! Hee!..." They sing with a tempo that intensifies the atmosphere and takes my breath away!
It is the Neem way. Everything about us is so intense that it blows the mind of the ordinary man away, one would just look on in amazement at the level of orderliness, rhythm and discipline with which we do what we do.
Karen's eyes begin to glow in the dark and I know she is about to pounce on me so I make my stance as she pounces on..
"...a Neem's glory is to fight till death under impossible circumstances..." our instructor continues.
Impossible circumstances indeed! I echo in my heart because Karen is beating the hell out of me.
It is so bad for me because even before I can block one of her moves, she has made three more moves as my brothers cheer her on with their rhythmic 'Hees'.
She lands several blows on my six pack belly and the muscles there begin to weaken and as I try an attack on her feet to make her loose balance, her feet disappears and the next thing I see is Karen spinning in the air and landing with her foot hard on the cheek bones of my skull and I find my self turning involuntarily before landing hard with my face on the white sand and my lips kissing the sand so hard that some grains enter my mouth, I spit them out forcefully.
My jaw hurts, my teeth aches, my lips hurt and I feel some warm liquid run down my cheek from the opening of my ear, but Neems do not give up in a fight so I try to get up but again I feel her feet hit hard against the spine of my back and I fall back down harder on my chest this time, Karen has not finished with me…
Karen I am Razal your friend remember? Are you not going to take it easy with me today? I plead in my heart.
She does not seem to be slowing down until the door of the hall opens up forcefully, introducing our handsome Prince Meizza and who walks in with two priestesses in white raiment following behind him with two bright flame torches in their hands illuminating the hall. We all halt in surprise as he seems to be pushed on by some urgency.
The Prince of Neems never returns to the crypts of Bane after he completes his training, he stays in Golem and commands the Neem army who are the personal guards of the Assyrian King!
But Meizza is fond of breaking Neem laws. I hear that he bedded one of the priestesses of Asure the god of fire during his time in the Crypts hence, the priestess was burned alive while he fought his way out of the cruel Neem judgement, a trial by combat and against impossible odds!
He fought against fifty trained Neem soldiers from the golden army at once and he was still a sixteen year old trainee! He emerged victorious! That was the day he earned the respect and fear of all the Golemites and Neems.
The story also bears that he ate the kidneys of all his slain brothers raw, to show the pain of his beloved priestess who was burned alive by Neem law! So no one questions Meizza for breaking Neem laws anymore.
He approaches the priest in his confident stride.
"What is the Prince of Neem doing in the temple of Asure?"our white bearded Priest asks as we all look on in intrigue, but before we can understand what is going on Meizza lands a hard blow on the jaw of Al-ain and he falls hard on the floor!
The priestesses rush towards Al-Ain to tender some aid but Meizza looks at them with a fury in his eyes and they halt instantly and retrace their steps slowly until they are at a safe distance away from him.
We all stand at attention to the presence of our Prince. I stand with my body complaining severely from pain in several areas of my body all thanks to Karen.
My body quarrels with me conspicuously as it manages to stand like a stone statue just like my brothers.
"...how dare you authorize the entry of merchandise from Babylon without my consent?" he asks angrily and Al-Ain bows to his feet.
"I am sorry my lord!"It is a peace offering from Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. The finest wines in Babylon made by the Persians themselves and presented to us because they seek audience to reach a peace treaty and end this bloody war"
"... what don't you understand? There is no end to this war! Not until all of Assyria lies in ruins and bows at the feet of the Babylon Dragon!"
"... but my lord you should understand that I as the priest of the gods of Golem am an advocate for peace for all of Golem, for all our women and children who cannot fight..."
"...old fool " Meizza interrupts "...of all your teachings to me in this temple you fail to understand the politics and intricacies of King and Kingdom!"
"Listen on and understand my sayings" He turns to us who look on standing at attention.
"There can be no peace without war! A king always wants it all, everything, all land, all wealth, all gods! And what he cannot get, he will destroy! And this is what Babylon wants, all of Assyria's lands, our women, our children, and the even plains of Hanan where we harvest! Everything!" he yells in pain.
"But they know they are no match for the mighty Neems so they do not dare us in battle. But I see that your instructor here is keen on letting them into our lands and betraying our King who has been fleeing from the defeat of Nineveh in the hands of King Nebo-polassar of Babylon.”
I am shocked! We are shocked by this news. Nineveh is the capital of Assyria and King Nebo has defeated our King in our capital after five years of war.
What could this mean for the future of Assyria?
“No, I do not mean it in that way your highness…” Al-Ain pleads standing to his feet and falling again on his knees in reverence to Meizza.
“…while my father is weary of King Nebo, I do not fear his Prince Nebuchadnezzar the commander of the Babylonian army. I am only weary of betrayal from my own men” he interrupts Al-Ain with deep sadness written over his countenance.
“My father was betrayed in the siege of Nineveh…”
He is interrupted by the door as it goes ajar again with a female Neem warrior in her golden armor walking in and Kneeling on one foot with her face bowed to earth in the presence of Meizza our prince.
He walks slowly towards the warrior expectant.
“A message from the King has arrived my lord” we hear her say as she presents a scroll to the Prince.
He takes it from her and turns to us and asks;
“Who here is learned in the wisdom of Nabu the god of scribbles?” (he asks for who can read)
“Razal your highness!” Karen answers without hesitation.
He seems to be impressed with the confidence with which Karen speaks up to him and he walks into the midst of the trainees where we stand on the sand to meet her and he stands before her intimidating her with his height and presence but she doesn't move an inch or bat an eyelid. He studies Karen,
“what is your name?” he asks
“Karen my lord”
He attempts to hit Karen with a blow on her face but she instinctually evades his heavy arm tilting her entire body to the opposite side and somehow manages to return the blow with her other hand but Meizza catches her fist in his cupped palm and smiles;
“Impressive... you are the Hebrew Neem?”
“yes my lord”
"I have heard of your talents” He smiles again, “who is Razal?”
Karen points at me with the corner of her eyes because I am standing next to her and Meizza lands a quick destabilizing blow on my left eye with I am supposed to evade reflexively but I do not because he is too fast for me, I fall on the sand again grunting of pain as I hear mocking giggles from my brothers.
“Get up Razal” he says and throws the scroll down at me... “Read that!” he commands.
I manage to pick up the scroll, staggering to my feet as I unroll it to unveil the scribbled symbols and letters in it, I read out loud amidst my severe ocular pain.
“… gather the golden army of Neems and come to us, we make our last stand with the Egyptians by our side at Carchemish, against Babylon and her allies.
Prepare the Golden army for utter destruction of King Nebo once and for all. They do not know about the Neem army or what they can do, we use this to our advantage.
Let us finish this son, for the preservation of our great Kingdom.See that your brother Simchin fares well in the Crypts of Bane.
See you at the hills of Carchemish.” I read out loud.“…gather the army at the Plains of Assure, we march to Carchemish as soon as our war supplies are ready” Meizza commands the warrior instantly and she hits her hand on her chest with a slight bow and leaves the hall, walking away with some urgency.
“Get ready, all of you..” he points at us trainees.
“… you forsake peace to fight a lost cause?” Al-Ain asks
“ I fight only for glory as all must die. This is what a Neem’s life is about”
“…and you risk the lives of these children for this lost cause? They are not even Neems yet…” he reiterates.
“They become Neems when I say they are!” Meizza thunders and peace is still.
“For five years I waited for this invitation from my father to join this war and end it but my father’s pride never let him send it, his ego has not let him win this war and as long as I am concerned this war is simply a game of pride and dominion between Babylon and Assyria, nothing more! …my father let them wax stronger, he should have ended this long ago but... Not anymore,” he shakes his head “ this stupid war ends now"
“No human on earth can match the golden army in battle, they can not even match these trainees so I have no fear. We march to avenge poor Assyrian soldiers whose deaths could have been avoided and this is final…”
“Rest yourselves today for tomorrow your lives begin or end…” he says to us and walks away leaving us with mixed feelings of ecstatic joy and deep saddness.

GRAY EYES CHAPTER TWENTY: PRINCE OF BABYLON
"The worst battle to fight is the battle with your own flesh..."-Casmir E.C............................................................."Take the city!" I hear a loud voice cry and then the horn of the Amorites sounds from the top of the walls of Perth, it is my brother Zebedee who blows it.He reaches the top of the wall and slaughters many archers, the others who are left flee in retreat. Some of them fall off the height of the wall voluntarily to their deaths, for it is better to choose an easy death than to face the wrath of gray-eyed Neem warriors and a host of Amorite carnivores.Victory is won ...

GRAY EYES CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: WORLD'S GREATEST CITY
Inside Nineveh, the cradle of civilization.****** NINEVEH TWO YEARS AGO ******I am amazed at the wonders of this great city, the strong yellow walls and the beautiful gardens. "... He who knows what a battlefield is, knows it is the worst place to negotiate with death..."- Casmir E. C..****Rain drops and heavy winds are the music that fuel our fury. GRAY EYES CHAPTER SIXTEEN: RED EYE KING
I am helpless.I can not stand to my feet as quickly as their horses can reach me.They are about to crush me when a powerful force throws them backwards and away from me so they all crash hard onto a mighty tree. They crash so hard that the tree itself cracks at the strength of the force and falls on them all, soldiers, chariots, and horses alike. Blood splashes like slurps of mud all over the place.Only one horse survives this and it rises and gallops away from the mess.I turn and lo, it is Ameera who out of her cleched fist raises a powerful force such I have never seen before. She wears a black hooded cape and paints her face with black like the Amorites. She no longer wears her white wrapper like an Oracle, she is in all black and looks like the night. She is even more evil than I thought. And she is prepared for the battle?
GRAY EYES CHAPTER FIFTEEN: HELL
The impact of a sound slap leads me back to consciousness!"Wake up you red eyed chicken!" Zebedee cusses holding me up; "for we are under attack!"I still feel a bit dizzy and drowsy, I do not fully comprehend what he says but then he lands another resounding slap on my cheek."Babylon is here!" ... And then my spirit jumps into my body!"Babylon! How?""Ask the gods when you meet them, grab a sword and follow me!" he instructs me and takes off.I get up in the quickest possible time and run after him as we race towards the encampment of the Amorites, but then I begin to remember the previous events.Simchin is gone and somehow I find myself lying unconscious on the outskirts of the camp. How long have I been unconscious for that I have to be thrown out of camp? How come my brother Zebedee is back so soon?
