Ch. 21

Although I had made up my mind to wake up before One and then wake him up in a special way, I was the one who was woken from a deep sleep by a slight shake of my shoulder."I have to go." One propped himself up on the mattress with one knee and leaned over me. "Take a little rest today and stop training so that you are really fit again when it really starts."

Ch. 22

The next morning I woke up alone. For the first time since we got back to headquarters. It was strange and I didn't like it, so I got up quickly, got dressed, and checked to see if One was still anywhere. Why hadn't he woken me up like usual before he left? Just as I was sitting on the sofa in the living area, I heard the door open, followed by voices talking. I recognized both of them and stood up in surprise when Arron appeared behind One in the living area.

Ch. 23

I heard him enter the suite and although my heart skipped joyfully, I stayed in bed with the covers pulled up to my chin. It wasn't long before One got to the bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed. I felt the mattress give a little under his weight."You haven't eaten" was the first sentence that broke the oppressive silence between us.

Ch. 24

“Use your forearms to help. Don't use your knees, use your feet! Yes, that's good. You can do it just a few more inches, Riley. Come on!"I was completely out of breath and trembling as I left the obstacle behind me, but one feeling outweighed those sensations - joy. I had conquered another obstacle and felt happiness flow through my body in warm waves. My lips widened in a grin and I felt myself beaming.

Ch. 25

The next few days dragged on and I struggled not to let myself be caught by an alluring low. The temptation to give up hope and stop my efforts was tremendous. My suggestion to show the women in the area how to defend oneself had been turned down by the people One had spoken to. I hadn't dared start another conversation with Arron about Sava and left him alone. Sava got worse every time I saw her. She was barely a shadow of herself. And I couldn't help her. All of these setbacks dragged me down and began to raise doubts as to whether the life I was leading now was right for me. Despite the training with Arron, the occasional nice encounters with Iris and the evening hours with One that I longed for during the day

Ch. 26

Training with One was different from training with Arron. I expected him to treat me with the utmost caution, and I was surprised to find that he didn't. On the contrary - after just a short warm-up, he really got going and didn't give me a breather. His grips were hard, sometimes rough and painful, and I liked the fact that he didn't treat me as if I were made of glass, but met me at eye level. Only the thought of why he consistently carried out this tough training did my joy soften. He prepared me for the tough world outside of headquarters. To our separation.

Ch. 27

The next day we drove almost continuously, stopping only to eat something or to answer nature's call , as Arron put it. In the evening we reached the secured zone and finally several small houses that stood in a circle around a flat surface. They looked pretty shabby, but I could see someone was in the process of rebuilding them. There were stones and boards lying around everywhere, as well as other materials."Will this be our base?" I asked Arron.

Ch. 28

The dawn did not begin to dawn until we were on the way to the village that had been discovered by one of the hunter troops. As Arron had assured me, I was allowed to approach the women who lived there alone at first. I hid the weapon he had given me as protection in the waistband of my pants under the protective vest. Always at hand. The first woman to see me opened her eyes in amazement and froze. I immediately raised both hands to symbolize that I didn't want to harm her.&nbs

Ch. 28

Only on closer inspection did I realize that I was wrong. Hope and joy fizzled out when I noticed that the man who spoke to Arron wasn't quite as tall as One. His hair was also a little darker, his shoulders less broad. He wasn't wearing Hunter clothes either, but a shirt and black trousers made of slightly shiny fabric.Confused about this new visitor, it took me a few more minutes to see that a dozen armed men were standing nearby, keeping an eye on the area. When Arron's gaze

Ch. 29

I felt dizzy when One let go of me so I dug my fingers into the fabric of his shirt to keep holding on to him. Then I looked up at his face. He looked different, his cheeks clean-shaven, his hair neatly combed back from his face. Neat and tidy. I immediately missed the bold and rough that had always surrounded him."You shouldn't have come here," he said the next moment, which gave me a painful stitch in the chest. His kiss had made it clear to me that he missed me as much
