Chapter 41

Yvonne's mention of "loving" reminded him of her monologue of affection for Erick earlier on the yacht. His lips twitched up a corner and he hissed, "Speak for yourself."Yvonne decided not to retort preferring to cherish the stillness except for Damon's heavy breathes that broke the silence. The pain in his shoulder was getting more numb by the minute, and he began to feel worried. He was worried that he might not last the longer the dart remained in his wound. He extracted a Swiss Army knife from his pocket and handed it out to Yvonne, saying, "Can you please help me remove the steel dart on my back?"As if he unwilling to be rejected, he pressed, "I will make sure you're adequately compensated after this.""No need," Yvonne muttered curtly, "You helped me before, so I'm only returning the favor. You won't even have to thank me!""All right," he responded, the edge of his lip curling sardonically. As flippantly as she agreed to help, but when Yvonne saw Damon's wound, she coul

Chapter 42

"Give me time," he breathed into Yvonne's ear.Bare-chested, he leaned against her. She was still in her skirt, but she was wet, and the close proximity allowed her to sense the heat emanating from the man's body. Even more so, she closely felt the touch of a person of the opposite gender. Her forehead creased slightly with discomfort from being so close to him.But the narrow space in this little cavern allowed her no room to move away.More so, with the man's massive pressure weighing her down, she could hardly move. They remain silent and the little crevice became so still that only the cacophony of sea waves and breezes could be heard from outside. After what seemed like a while, Damon finally pulled himself up. "I'm fine now," he said.Yvonne responded speechlessly and turned around in that tight little space, picking up the cloth strip to help him redress his wound."You're bleeding again," she muttered, miffed, as she set off to work. She stared intently at the laceratio

He could sense the softness of her touch through the thin layer of clothing and it was a tingly-cold sensation.Yvonne found the tools and quickly retrieved them, all this while avoiding his gaze and said, "I'll try."It was about three or four o'clock in the afternoon. Shafts of light from the summer sun outside poured through the little cracks and holes in the ceiling like golden blades that pierced the darkness in the narrow space and divided it into various shapes.Damon's wound throbbed painfully all at once and suddenly he felt nauseous. He leaned back against the jagged stone behind him, watching Yvonne's deft and delicate hands at work. Her fair and slender fingers first checked out how his watch worked before she began disassembling it."The chip is an integrated type, but I think it is the contact points that are damaged... After you open it..." Damon instructed, but his voice faltered after a moment. The pain took such a great toll on him that he could not continue."

Chapter 44

Help came in less than a half-hour. They were Damon's men and Yvonne never expected them to be so quick. The rumbles of a helicopter's rotor from afar grew steadily louder overhead, swelling to a roaring crescendo as it drew nearer. Moments later, men appeared, surrounding them and when they saw Damon, they reverently addressed him, "Mr. Brown."Yvonne boarded the helicopter with them, relieved to be able to see the sky again. The small island quickly became a little dot before it ultimately disappeared from their sight.Damon's injuries were redressed en route and he was given anti-inflammatory drugs.Strapped in by his safety belt, he leaned back into his seat, his face sickly-pale and tired. But he could not sleep. He turned to look at Yvonne, then he said to the man in the seat in front of him, "A blanket, Mayne."The man dutifully handed over a blanket which Damon gave to Yvonne, "Use this."Yvonne took the blanket and draped it over her wet skirt, "Thanks."The helicopte

It could only be surmised that this was one of Damon's private estates, for the same steely atmosphere emanated from every corner of the ranch estate.Almost every available room in the estate was adequately furnished without any excess furniture and that left quite a lot of empty spaces. She walked to the water dispenser and got some water. On her way back, she saw that the light was on in the room beside hers. That seemed to be Damon's master bedroom. She paused for only a couple of seconds and before she could turn to go back to her own room, the door to the master bedroom opened.Their eyes met in wordless bewilderment.Damon was dressed in gray cotton pajamas, unbuttoned and part of his chest was clearly visible. Lethargy practically leaked from his eyes as he came nearer, saying, "Can't sleep?"She shook her head, waving her cup around as she replied, "I just came out to get a drink.""Go to bed then. Everything might finally come to an end after tomorrow," Damon's voice

Chapter 46

"Hmph. After being so badly injured and having spent such a long time in the water, he should be resting. Serves him right for having a meeting so late in the night."Yvonne sneered quietly to herself, feeling glad for some good news to go to bed with. She woke up to a bright morning the next day and changed into the new clothes that the servants had prepared for her before sitting quietly on the bed, trying to listen for any sounds from outside.Only, nothing could be heard. Everything was so silent outside that she could not even hear the patter of footsteps. She opened the door quietly and peeked out. Finding the door next to her room tightly shut, she walked down the stairs to the sitting room. The servants busy scurrying about in the kitchen saw her and politely greeted her, "Good morning, Ms. York. Breakfast shall be served right away.""Thank you," she said to them. One of the servants remembered something. She went out and returned with a little bag. "Ms. York," she said

Chapter 47

Then she recalled Damon working till late at night, even while battling a fever and the notion sent a sweeping chill through her."What is he actually?" she wondered. It was conceivable to guess that if the scandal was indeed proven to be true, their winning of the tender would be revoked and Damon would be able to secure it again. It was like taking revenge without tainting his blade with blood.Even with her cursory understanding of the man, Yvonne was certain that her guess was as good as the truth itself. Even if she was mistaken, Damon Brown could just as easily fabricate some proof to checkmate his enemies!"Have I provoked a monster that I shouldn't have?" Yvonne thought, wondering if she should put as much distance between Damon and herself as possible...What sounded like the rumble of an engine drew nearer, then she heard the voices of men talking.Suddenly she recognized one of the voices; it was a voice that made her sit up straight! She rushed out from under the sha

Chapter 48

Yvonne could still remember when they were working together on the self-driving vehicle project; how the prodigal son Sully had dismantled the new car that his father had given to him, just so that he could study in detail the whole braking system. One of their teammates, a middle-aged breadwinner, grimaced and groaned about how Sully should have dismantled a cheaper car.Yet, Sully made the most out of the experience. In return for wrecking his own car, what he learned allowed the entire team to greatly improve their work efficiency.Yvonne looked slightly bewildered at her past catching up with her.An itchy-fingered Sully could not hold himself back any longer. With a silly grin, he cried, "Wow, you're great, girl! A fellow grease-monkey!"Yvonne felt a lump in her throat, her voice stifled by the flurry of memories of the times of their late-night hours together. "Together?" she asked indicatively.Beside them, Kyle Pegg did not need to be asked twice. He was already taking o

Being in Damon Brown's residence, Yvonne knew she needed to keep her suspicions to herself.Damon and everyone else did not appear for lunch. For the entire day until the evening, they were absent, leaving Yvonne wondering if they had gone out or were they simply too busy. She had dinner and decided to go out for a while."Is he still busy?" She moped quietly. The date of the robotics competition was nearing and her two-day absence would inevitably hamper her team's progress. The final slivers of sunlight sank into the horizon and darkness blanketed the sky. Yvonne strolled near the flowerbeds by the side of the estate's gate and saw to her surprise, a three-colored pansy blooming gloriously. With nothing else to do, she knelt and took out her phone to take a picture of it. It was then she heard the sounds of several cars racing from afar and screeching to a halt. She frowned as she looked up and saw the headlamps of the approaching vehicles and she quickly ducked into a dark corn

Chapter 50

The air in the corridor seemed to be sucked away by the mere presence of Damon Brown as he drew closer. With each step he took, the air grew thinner and thinner, so much so that one could hardly breathe. She seemed even shorter in her bare feet and when she saw him towering over her, her heart plummeted in fear.Knowing full well what he was capable of, Yvonne knew that murdering someone to prevent secrets from being leaked out was not beneath the merciless Damon Brown.Judging by their expressions, they must have been discussing something very important; much more important in fact, than compared to the mention of Mitchell Cook's name she inadvertently overheard when Damon was on the phone.Yvonne could have sworn that she caught the unmistakable fetor of blood as Damon approached her. It was only then she realized that it was actually a small damp patch of blood that made her slip and almost fall. His blood. Her throat suddenly became dry and her voice came out with great diffic
