Chapter 2 $750,000 A Month

Author: Little Nightlight
The next day.

Daylight had just arrived on the horizon. Nicholas’s punctual biological clock woke him from his deep slumber. He frowned as he slowly opened his cold, almond-shaped eyes.

Something felt amiss in his arms. Nicholas lowered his head to look.

He found his arms firmly wrapped around Daphne’s dainty little body. She was like a small animal. Her bare arms were draped over her breasts as if she was rejecting his hold on her. He could see tear stains all over her beautiful face…

Nicholas furrowed his brow as he stared at Daphne’s face in wonder.

It had been a very long time since he had slept with a woman.

The phone on the side of his bed vibrated and rang. Nicholas knew that it was a wake-up call from his assistant, Lucas. He snatched up his phone, rejected the call, pulled off the duvet, and got off the bed.

Fifteen minutes later, Nicholas stepped out of the bathroom. He was dressed neatly and immaculately-dressed once again.

As he walked past the bed, Nicholas glanced at it carelessly out of the corner of his eye. Suddenly, he paused and looked straight at the bed.

Nicholas stared at the bite mark that he had left, red-tinted and uneven. His eyes immediately burned with heat.

He remembered now!

This had never happened before. He had never done this before.

Nicholas took a deep breath. His eyes clouded with restraint as he gave Daphne one last, intense look. Then, he turned around and walked out the door.

He had to meet with a few important delegates today. He had plenty of time to play tonight.

He opened the door and found Lucas standing outside the door. “Mr. Wolfe.” He greeted him with reverence.

Nicholas lifted his long legs and walked out the door. “That one inside isn’t too bad. Leave her,” he said with a nonchalant look on his face.

Lucas, who walked behind Nicholas, stared at his back in astonishment. Usually, Mr. Wolfe would simply say two simple words—“leave her”, at the very most. Today, he had actually included the words “not bad”?

As the chief assistant of Wolfe Enterprises, Lucas knew exactly what to do.

…

Three hours after Nicholas’s departure, Daphne slowly woke up due to pain.

She felt a piercing pain on the back of her hand. Daphne frowned as she opened her eyes. She could barely make out a white contour through her blurred vision.

She stared blankly for a while, then managed to hazard a guess based on the clothes. This person looked like a doctor.

She slowly got up. However, someone’s sharp voice stopped her just as she moved.

“Miss! You’re in the middle of an intravenous drip. Please don’t move!” The doctor in front of Daphne warned.

Daphne was surprised. She looked at the back of her hand, frowned, and said, “An IV? Why would I need an IV?”

Daphne realized how bad her voice was when she opened her mouth; her throat felt as if it was on fire too.

“You’re suffering from soft tissue injuries and mild dehydration. Oh, right. Based on your voice, it sounds like you have a tear in your vocal cords too.”

The doctor’s formal tone felt more like a slew of continuous slaps on Daphne’s face.

However, she had already lost her dignity. There was nothing to hide.

Daphne paused, stared at the doctor, and said, “Please take this needle out for me.”

“I can’t do that.” The doctor refused.

“Please take out the needle. I don’t need medical treatment. I just want to leave.” Daphne’s eyes and tone were full of determination.

The doctor was taken aback. “Are you sure?” he asked.

Lucas had sent him here. It would be difficult for him to report back if he failed to provide this woman with proper medical treatment. However, it would be out of his hands if this woman insisted on leaving herself.

Daphne nodded resolutely. The doctor removed the needle for her.

“Could you please leave?” Daphne asked, hanging her head.

She could feel her nakedness under the covers. She wanted to wash up in the bathroom.

The doctor left. Daphne nearly lost her footing when she got off the bed. She gritted her teeth and forced herself to stand up straight. Daphne wrapped herself up with the duvet and headed toward the bathroom.

Daphne did not have time to look at herself in the mirror in the bathroom, unlike those typical heroines from romance novels. She couldn’t be bothered with sighs of regret. Instead, she quickly washed her face and had a shower.

Someone important was coming back today. She had to rush to the airport.

Daphne threw on yesterday’s clothes, opened the bathroom door, and quickly made her way out, but was stunned in place.

A woman was standing in the bedroom, with a few others behind her. Daphne was taken aback and had a bad feeling about this.

“Good day, miss. I’m Mathilda Harrison, Mr. Wolfe’s housekeeper. We have two important messages to convey to you after last night’s events.”

Daphne furrowed her brow suspiciously as Mathilda said that.

‘What message?’

The woman named Mathilda instructed, “To avoid any future complications, please take this medication.”

“What medication?” Daphne asked.

“A contraceptive.” Mathilda’s voice was calm and carried no emotions as if she had done this countless times before.

‘A contraceptive?’

Daphne stared at her blankly, then nodded. She marched toward Mathilda and asked, “Where is it?”

It looked like Nicholas was afraid that she would end up getting pregnant. Unfortunately, she had no intention of that!

Daphne had been reminding herself in the shower—the first order of business after she left was to buy a contraceptive pill.

Mathilda had seen many of Nicholas’s women before. They would either silently take the pill and wait for an opportunity to pounce or vehemently refuse the pill…

Therefore, Mathilda was not surprised by Daphne’s reaction at all. She quietly instructed a maid behind her to bring her the pill.

Daphne took the pill and did not ask for any water—she swallowed it dry. The pain in her throat made her frown. She turned to Mathilda and said, “Can I go now?”

She had taken the pill. Everything should be fine now.

“Not yet,” Mathilda replied. She watched Daphne as she lifted her hand, gesturing behind.

A maid behind her presented a file. Mathilda looked at Daphne and opened the file, then said, “I’ll need you to sign this, Miss. From this day on, you will be Mr. Wolfe’s mistress. You will be given $750,000 a month as your allowance. Medication bills will be compensated separately. You will also be given villa number 15-07 in Maple Leaf Garden, and a Bentley for driving around—”

“Wait a second!” Daphne stopped Mathilda before she could go on. She stared at her in astonishment. “What are you saying?”

‘A $750,000 allowance? A villa? A Bentley? What are these?’

“These are the privileges and obligations that you will receive after becoming Mr. Wolfe’s mistress,” Mathilda replied. “There are many other clauses as well. I am required to read them all to you, one by one, according to procedure. I’m very busy, so if you please, stop interrupting me. Okay?”

Daphne’s expression changed. “No!” she replied straight away.

“Mm?”Nicholas’ leg paused just before stepping onto the stairs. His lanky figure turned around. His eyes flashed as he raised his brow and asked, “When did she arrive?”‘That little girl’s been discharged?’“Ten minutes ago,” Mathilda replied.“Understood.” Nicholas turned around and headed upstairs.Mathilda took a step forward and said, “Master Nicholas, what about your date with Miss Bianca?”“Cancel it!”Nicholas’s voice held no warmth. His tall figure disappeared into the staircase.“Okay,” Mathilda turned around to make the call.…Daphne was kneeling on the ground, as she had found a plug point behind a cupboard. She plugged her phone in to charge and waited anxiously.A few minutes later, she pressed the button to switch on the phone. Her phone showed no response…“Hey, what’s going on? Is it not working again?” Daphne frowned, shaking her phone around. She had been using this phone for a very long time, and the battery would be unresponsive sometimes.Daphne wa

Nicholas opened one of the ointments and applied it to Daphne’s wound. His application was uneven because he was using every inch of his willpower to control his hands…After applying the medicine on her back, Nicholas’s voice rang aloud again from behind her. “Take off your clothes!”“Huh?”Daphne whipped her head around and looked at Nicholas but was met with Nicholas’s vicious face.“What do you mean, ‘huh’? Strip!”Daphne was speechless.“Master Nicholas, lunch is served.”Lucas appeared at the doorway, carrying a paper bag. He had just spoken when he realized that something was amiss.Daphne, who should be lying on the bed, was sitting bolt upright on the couch. Her misty gaze was staring straight at him. The supposedly vigorous and lively Master Nicholas was horizontal on the hospital bed.‘Is Master Nicholas’s headache bothering him again?’Lucas frowned. He hurriedly strode toward the sickbed. “Master Nicholas, are you alright?”“Stop right there!” Nicholas roared i

Nicholas coldly eyed Daphne. His tall figure got up from the couch. Then, he strode toward Daphne with his long legs.Daphne sensed it. She lifted her head and stared in astonishment at Nicholas, who was getting increasingly close to her.Nicholas kept his eye on Daphne, then lay down next to her.The VIP patient room had a bed big enough to fit four adults. Daphne jolted away from him as if she had been electrocuted. Moving her body, which was riddled with injuries, made her wince in pain.“Are you good at massages?” Nicholas’s icy voice suddenly asked.Daphne paused. She lifted her head, looked at him, and shook her head. “No.”“You can’t even massage temples?”Nicholas turned his head over and frowned at Daphne. This was Daphne’s first time in such close proximity to him under these circumstances. Her dainty face instantly blushed as she avoided Nicholas’s gaze. “I’ve never massaged anyone, so I don’t know if I’m good at it,” she said.Nicholas’s eyes flashed, and he chuckl

There was a purple mark on her shoulder. It was obvious that disinfectant had been applied to the wound.Daphne vaguely remembered Nicholas biting her, and not just on the shoulder.Today hurt much more than that time back at The Palace Hotel. Her entire body hurt as if bones had been dislocated.Daphne straightened out her clothes, then reached out to take the ointment on the bedside table and examined it…Click. She suddenly heard the sound of the hospital room door open. Daphne jumped, then immediately slipped her hand under the covers and lifted her gaze toward the door.“You’re awake, Miss Blythe?”Lucas walked in.Daphne wasn’t wearing her glasses. She squinted at Lucas. “Mr. Shaw. What are you doing here?”“I’ve always been here. Master Nicholas needed a document, so I had to leave for a while,” Lucas explained.Daphne was surprised. She nodded. It looked like the doctor had misunderstood her relationship with Lucas and thought that he was her boyfriend.Daphne wasn’

Nicholas was taken aback. The storm in his dark pupils slowly dissipated. His eyes filled with ridicule as he stared at her. “Aren’t you in college? Why are you so superstitious? What? Does your college teach fortune-telling?”‘Now it makes sense. I had to comb through the entire villa to find her. So after all of that effort, it’s all because she’d hidden away in mourning, thinking that she’s bad luck! She must be insane!’Daphne’s face began heating up after that stinging remark from his venomous tongue. She bit her lips and replied, “I’m not superstitious. Mathilda says that you and I can’t…”Daphne lowered her head as she mumbled the last few words of her reply, in a decibel exclusively for ants.“Can’t what? Can’t have sex with me?” Nicholas icily snapped.Daphne’s face blushed even more. She kept her head firmly down, too afraid to look Nicholas in the eye as she nodded.Silence.The only noise in the room was the sound of the wind beating against the cotton gauze curtains

“Miss Blythe.”Just as Daphne was admiring her surroundings, Mathilda suddenly came to a halt, turned around, and calmly stared at her.Daphne jumped. “Mm?”Mathilda reached out and opened the room door next to her. “This will be your room from now on,” she said. “You’ll stay here for now, as your relative has just passed away. It would be bad luck for you to share a room with Master Nicholas. You will move into Master Nicholas’s room after you’ve completed a week of mourning.”Daphne was taken aback. She instinctively looked at her black mourning clothes. She had chosen to go into mourning for Joan.“Do you have any questions, Miss Blythe?” Mathilda asked.Daphne snapped back into her senses, shook her head, and replied, “No.”This was good. She wouldn’t have to share a room with Nicholas for the time being and wouldn’t feel too nervous, even though Nicholas wasn’t around at the moment.“Please go inside then,” Mathilda calmly said.Daphne walked in. The maid put her luggage

A blustery wind was beating against Daphne’s long hair, blocking Joan’s gravestone from view. Daphne squinted and said, “So sue me!”She ignored Olivia’s extra sharpened screams and ended the call. She clutched the phone tightly in her hand, staring fixedly at the gravestone.…As they headed dow

Daphne rushed toward the operating theater. Just as she stepped out of the elevator, she stumbled.“Ah!”“Watch out!” Lucas deftly caught Daphne and asked, “Are you alright, Miss Blythe?”“I’m fine.”Daphne moved her leg and smiled at Lucas gratefully. Then she quickly headed to the operating th

“I know!” Daphne exclaimed, cutting off Lucas.“You don’t have to list the benefits of being Nicholas Wolfe’s mistress. You don’t have to tell me about how every girl wants this opportunity.” Daphne stared at Lucas grimly. “Because I see no glory in becoming someone’s mistress.”Lucas stared at Da
