Chapter 13 I’m Not Indian

Author: Little Nightlight
The maid led Daphne to the guest bedroom on the second floor. She was just about to leave when Daphne stopped her.

“I’m sorry, would you happen to have a computer? I need to use it,” Daphne asked.

The maid stared at Daphne in surprise, probably out of curiosity. Who didn’t have a computer these days?

Daphne really didn’t have one. In fact, her phone model was extremely old. Its functions were limited to calling and texting. She couldn’t even use it to surf the internet.

“I’ll have to ask Master Nicholas,” the maid replied.

Daphne was taken aback. She nodded.

She was living under his roof. Naturally, he made the decisions.

The maid had gone off to ask Nicholas for permission. Daphne walked to the couch and sat down. She put her luggage bag aside.

Daphne did not intend to unpack her luggage because she did not intend to stay here at all.

The bedroom door was pushed open not too long after. Daphne lifted her head to look. The maid had returned, carrying a laptop.

“Master Nicholas says that you may use this for now. He’s asked you to be careful with it, or it’ll be added to your tab,” the maid explained, conveying Nicholas’s message.

Daphne was stunned. ‘Was that a reminder to pay him back?’

“I understand.” Daphne accepted the laptop, and the maid left.

Daphne sent Phoebe a message while waiting for the computer to turn on, telling her that she had found a temporary place to stay and not to wait for her.

After sending the message, Daphne connected the laptop to the WiFi, went on Google, then concentrated on browsing property announcements for rent.

“Master Nicholas…”

The vague sound of a woman’s moans suddenly interrupted the silence in her bedroom. Daphne was shocked. She quickly turned toward her door.

‘That explains why the noise traveled, the door is still open.’

She didn’t need to hazard a guess to know what was going on.

Daphne took a deep breath and pretended to be deaf. She got up and closed the door.

The moans grew louder and louder as she approached the door. Daphne quickened her pace and slammed the door shut.

The world finally returned to peace.

Daphne took a deep breath, patted her blushing cheeks, and turned around to continue looking for a place to stay.

She didn’t want to stay a minute longer. Thus, after finding a few acceptable places, she immediately called the landlord to set up a viewing, even though the prices were higher than she had expected.

She managed to set up two meetings with two landlords. Daphne closed the laptop, picked up her phone and purse, then went out the door.

…

That afternoon, Nicholas walked downstairs after his afternoon nap. His indolent figure cast a long shadow on the ground.

“Master Nicholas.” The maid greeted him with reverence.

Nicholas sat on the couch, then picked up a financial newspaper, freshly delivered today. “Where’s the girl I brought back today?” he asked absent-mindedly.

Nicholas smirked tauntingly when he remembered that loud slam on the door.

“Miss Montgomery left soon after she arrived,” the maid answered.

Nicholas lifted his gaze. “She’s gone out?”

“Yes, Master Nicholas. Miss Montgomery mentioned going to look at apartments,” the maid replied.

‘Looking at apartments… Was she that eager to leave my place?’

Nicholas smirked, then icily said, “Ignore her.”

‘Keep looking. She’ll be mine in a week anyway.’

Surprised, the maid lowered her head and replied, “Yes, Master Nicholas.”

By the time Daphne returned, it was already 10:00 p.m.

She hadn’t eaten all day because she had gone to look for part-time jobs after viewing apartments.

She didn’t even have a single drop of water. Daphne was both tired and hungry, but very happy.

She may not have much money left, but she had found a place to stay. She could move out tomorrow and pick up Joan.

Actually, Daphne would have moved out right now if it wasn’t so late and if Nicholas’s villa wasn’t in such an obscure location.

Daphne looked left and right when she walked into the villa, then walked into the kitchen.

The living room and kitchen were completely empty. Daphne couldn’t find anyone at all, and she was starving. After searching all around, she decided to raid the fridge and find something to eat herself.

Daphne saw the food in the fridge, took out a few vegetables, and headed inside the kitchen to wash them.

This kitchen was enormous, even bigger than the Montgomerys’ living room. Daphne silently chastised herself as she washed the vegetables—everyone was different, so she shouldn’t be comparing.

Daphne filled a pot with water, turned on the gas, and waited for the water to boil before putting some noodles into the pot. Then, she waited for the noodles to cook before adding some seasoning…

A few minutes later, a bowl of fragrant noodle soup began permeating the air.

The sight of fresh green onions and snow-white noodles really fired up Daphne’s appetite. She took a deep breath. Just as she was about to put her fork into the bowl, a man’s voice sounded from behind.

“What are you doing?”

“Ah!” Daphne whirled around, startled.

She saw Nicholas leaning against the door, watching her. His arms were crossed over his chest, and he had a grim look on his face, looking very aloof.

“Y-you… What are you doing here?” Daphne stared at Nicholas, traumatized.

‘When did he arrive downstairs? Why didn’t I hear him? Doesn’t he know that he could have given me a heart attack?’

“I asked, what are you doing?” Nicholas frowned.

Daphne stared at Nicholas and replied, “I’ve made noodles.” She paused, then immediately added, “Don’t worry, I won’t leech off you. I’ll pay you back for the ingredients I’ve used!”

She really wasn’t in a position to cough up the money for that huge debt, but she certainly had the money for these ingredients.

Nicholas eyed Daphne icily. “Bring it here. Let me see.”

“Eh?”

Daphne was in shock.

“Are you deaf?” Nicholas frowned irritably, then glanced at Daphne and headed into the dining room.

Daphne stared at Nicholas, who was sitting on a chair like a prince, then looked at her still-warm bowl of noodles and reluctantly brought the bowl to him.

The steaming bowl of noodle soup was placed in front of Nicholas. He lowered his gaze toward it.

Nicholas had only come downstairs to get a glass of water until he was attracted by the fragrant smell of something completely unfamiliar. He was drawn toward it and found, to his surprise, that the girl was cooking in the kitchen.

Daphne stared at Nicholas hesitantly. ‘Has he not seen noodle soup before? How long is he going to stare at it? How am I supposed to eat this if the noodles become all starchy?’

“How am I supposed to eat this without a fork? I’m not Indian!”

Nicholas stared at Daphne irritably.

He never liked having supper. Today, however, he wanted to give it a try.

Daphne stared at Nicholas in astonishment. ‘He wants to eat noodles?’

“Mm?”Nicholas’ leg paused just before stepping onto the stairs. His lanky figure turned around. His eyes flashed as he raised his brow and asked, “When did she arrive?”‘That little girl’s been discharged?’“Ten minutes ago,” Mathilda replied.“Understood.” Nicholas turned around and headed upstairs.Mathilda took a step forward and said, “Master Nicholas, what about your date with Miss Bianca?”“Cancel it!”Nicholas’s voice held no warmth. His tall figure disappeared into the staircase.“Okay,” Mathilda turned around to make the call.…Daphne was kneeling on the ground, as she had found a plug point behind a cupboard. She plugged her phone in to charge and waited anxiously.A few minutes later, she pressed the button to switch on the phone. Her phone showed no response…“Hey, what’s going on? Is it not working again?” Daphne frowned, shaking her phone around. She had been using this phone for a very long time, and the battery would be unresponsive sometimes.Daphne wa

Nicholas opened one of the ointments and applied it to Daphne’s wound. His application was uneven because he was using every inch of his willpower to control his hands…After applying the medicine on her back, Nicholas’s voice rang aloud again from behind her. “Take off your clothes!”“Huh?”Daphne whipped her head around and looked at Nicholas but was met with Nicholas’s vicious face.“What do you mean, ‘huh’? Strip!”Daphne was speechless.“Master Nicholas, lunch is served.”Lucas appeared at the doorway, carrying a paper bag. He had just spoken when he realized that something was amiss.Daphne, who should be lying on the bed, was sitting bolt upright on the couch. Her misty gaze was staring straight at him. The supposedly vigorous and lively Master Nicholas was horizontal on the hospital bed.‘Is Master Nicholas’s headache bothering him again?’Lucas frowned. He hurriedly strode toward the sickbed. “Master Nicholas, are you alright?”“Stop right there!” Nicholas roared i

Nicholas coldly eyed Daphne. His tall figure got up from the couch. Then, he strode toward Daphne with his long legs.Daphne sensed it. She lifted her head and stared in astonishment at Nicholas, who was getting increasingly close to her.Nicholas kept his eye on Daphne, then lay down next to her.The VIP patient room had a bed big enough to fit four adults. Daphne jolted away from him as if she had been electrocuted. Moving her body, which was riddled with injuries, made her wince in pain.“Are you good at massages?” Nicholas’s icy voice suddenly asked.Daphne paused. She lifted her head, looked at him, and shook her head. “No.”“You can’t even massage temples?”Nicholas turned his head over and frowned at Daphne. This was Daphne’s first time in such close proximity to him under these circumstances. Her dainty face instantly blushed as she avoided Nicholas’s gaze. “I’ve never massaged anyone, so I don’t know if I’m good at it,” she said.Nicholas’s eyes flashed, and he chuckl

There was a purple mark on her shoulder. It was obvious that disinfectant had been applied to the wound.Daphne vaguely remembered Nicholas biting her, and not just on the shoulder.Today hurt much more than that time back at The Palace Hotel. Her entire body hurt as if bones had been dislocated.Daphne straightened out her clothes, then reached out to take the ointment on the bedside table and examined it…Click. She suddenly heard the sound of the hospital room door open. Daphne jumped, then immediately slipped her hand under the covers and lifted her gaze toward the door.“You’re awake, Miss Blythe?”Lucas walked in.Daphne wasn’t wearing her glasses. She squinted at Lucas. “Mr. Shaw. What are you doing here?”“I’ve always been here. Master Nicholas needed a document, so I had to leave for a while,” Lucas explained.Daphne was surprised. She nodded. It looked like the doctor had misunderstood her relationship with Lucas and thought that he was her boyfriend.Daphne wasn’

Nicholas was taken aback. The storm in his dark pupils slowly dissipated. His eyes filled with ridicule as he stared at her. “Aren’t you in college? Why are you so superstitious? What? Does your college teach fortune-telling?”‘Now it makes sense. I had to comb through the entire villa to find her. So after all of that effort, it’s all because she’d hidden away in mourning, thinking that she’s bad luck! She must be insane!’Daphne’s face began heating up after that stinging remark from his venomous tongue. She bit her lips and replied, “I’m not superstitious. Mathilda says that you and I can’t…”Daphne lowered her head as she mumbled the last few words of her reply, in a decibel exclusively for ants.“Can’t what? Can’t have sex with me?” Nicholas icily snapped.Daphne’s face blushed even more. She kept her head firmly down, too afraid to look Nicholas in the eye as she nodded.Silence.The only noise in the room was the sound of the wind beating against the cotton gauze curtains

“Miss Blythe.”Just as Daphne was admiring her surroundings, Mathilda suddenly came to a halt, turned around, and calmly stared at her.Daphne jumped. “Mm?”Mathilda reached out and opened the room door next to her. “This will be your room from now on,” she said. “You’ll stay here for now, as your relative has just passed away. It would be bad luck for you to share a room with Master Nicholas. You will move into Master Nicholas’s room after you’ve completed a week of mourning.”Daphne was taken aback. She instinctively looked at her black mourning clothes. She had chosen to go into mourning for Joan.“Do you have any questions, Miss Blythe?” Mathilda asked.Daphne snapped back into her senses, shook her head, and replied, “No.”This was good. She wouldn’t have to share a room with Nicholas for the time being and wouldn’t feel too nervous, even though Nicholas wasn’t around at the moment.“Please go inside then,” Mathilda calmly said.Daphne walked in. The maid put her luggage

A blustery wind was beating against Daphne’s long hair, blocking Joan’s gravestone from view. Daphne squinted and said, “So sue me!”She ignored Olivia’s extra sharpened screams and ended the call. She clutched the phone tightly in her hand, staring fixedly at the gravestone.…As they headed dow
