"Don't smile just yet, Crimson." Father shook me out of my newfound revelry as he hefted the newly made sword over his shoulder. "It still needs to pass the final test."

"Which is?"

"Elemental Channeling," Father answered like it was the most basic thing in the world. "Unlike armor, Numerators have to be able to use the weapon for it to have value, little Cream."

Numerators? Like the fraction kind numerators? What're those then?

"Judging from your face, I bet you don't even know about the Fraction System yet."

"Fraction System?" Like the mathematical kind? This was kinda confusing, especially since I made sure to pay attention to the lesson mother taught me. Was it some kind of class system or something?

"I haven't taught that lesson yet Dear," I turned my attention towards the room's only entrance, mother's fiery red hair now swaying from the heat in the room as she leaned on the doorway. "I thought little Cream wasn't supposed to learn Runecraft yet?"

Mother was an imposing figure. While she always held me close during my younger years, she always held herself like some kind of warrior; her green eyes as attentive as a hawk whenever we found ourselves at the town square.

"I know, but I have a duty to our daughter Eul," Father replied, his tone sounding... resigned? "If she wants to learn, then I'll teach her what I know."

"Don't say I didn't warn you, Dear~"

Oof. That wasn't a tone anyone wanted to hear from their significant other.

"Come along little Cream," my mother beckoned me from outside the room, "let me teach you somethings about this world of ours."

"Yes, Mother."

Like the dutiful daughter that I was back in my first life, I swiftly followed after my mother's retreating form, still clutching at my newly made sword. It wasn't until we're outside that Mother deigned to pay her attention back to me; her expression uncharacteristically serious compared to her usual caring and kind persona. I stood unblinkingly, waiting for her to make the first move.

"There are certain truths to the world, Crimson," she started, looking out towards the rocky plains behind our house. "I know you're smarter than you choose to appear, so I hope I'm doing the right thing by telling you this."

A pit of nervous dread appeared in my chest. There was a hint of grim determination in my mother's voice; something I've never heard from her in the entirety of my life in this new world. I swallowed a lump of anxiety before paying full attention to what Mother has to say.

"Your father and I..." -Mother conjured a ball of flame in her hand- "we were once an Integer Unit." I couldn't keep my eyes away from Mother's flame that I didn't even notice that she was already beside me. "We worked directly for the Emperor for a few years. That's where we met actually."

A litany of questions swarmed my head as she talked about working for an Emperor? There was an Emperor?

"The Emperor rules the lands of Numenor, little Cream." A gentle hand rubbed the top of my head as my mother knelt down to my level, her loving eyes staring directly into my own as she gave me her lesson. "Don't worry about all the big stuff. I'm sure you'll learn about them eventually."

"But what about the truths you said?" I noticed that she was subtly avoiding the topic when she abruptly stood up in front of me. "Why am I-"

"Let Mommy speak, little Cream~" Her voice took on a tone I was all too familiar with. "You can ask questions later."

I quickly shook my head in obedience. Nobody wanted to face their mother's wrath, even with me technically being older than my own second mother.

"Good."

Mother smiled sweetly before her hand gently taking the sword off my embrace. It glowed a cool blue in her hands before suddenly turning into a fiery red hue, flames now licking the flat of the blade as she swung it with what looked to me as professional dexterity. There was grace in Mother's movements as she went through forms like it was an interpretative dance, before exhaling loudly as she willed the dancing flames around her to disappear. The fiery glow of the sword subsided, once more humming in a cool blue along its circuit-like etches.

That was pretty, unabashedly awe-inspiring.

Am I about to learn how to be a cool magician right now? That would be a neat payoff to being reincarnated into a backwater world.

"What you saw was the collective power of an Integer Unit." Mother explained as she twirled the sword in her hand like it was nothing. "The Elementalism and battle prowess of a Numerator, combined with the craftsmanship and Runic Expertise of a Denominator."

"Am I going to learn how to do all that?" My excitement was palpable.

"No." Wh-what? Why was Mother upset? "You will learn no such thing."

"Bu-"

"You will not speak of this to anyone, Crimson." There was a tone of desperation mixed with worry coming from Mother's voice. Why? There's got to be an answer. "Promise me."

"I-I promise, Mother." I squeaked out, nervousness replacing curiosity for a second as I addressed my mother. Even after all this time, I'm still afraid of parental figures-

"Th-thank you..." A warm embrace enveloped my whole body, my mother crying into my shoulder as she hugged me like I was about to die. "I promise it'll be over soon."

Like the sentimental daughter that I was back home, I hugged my sobbing mother while letting a few of my own tears escape me. There was a fear there... in her tone. Already I was asking a lot more questions than I was comfortable with answering.

What will be over? Why was she crying? Was there an enemy of some kind that needs defeating? There's gotta be a catch to me getting reborn in some medieval fantasy land. The fact that magic existed was already a sign of bad things to come in the long run. From what my extensive knowledge of fiction told me, transmigrated protagonists like me has to have some form of enemy to fight. If this was a story, I know I'd expect one to show up and murder-

No.

That's a thought I refuse to entertain.

Mother and Father were nothing but good to me in this new life. If some sort of deity wanted to make them into some kind of tragic backstory for me to work off of, they'll be sorely disappointed. I refuse to let anyone hurt my family! If this Emperor guy wanted to kill these people, then he'll have to go through me first.

Already, my mind came up with various reasons as to why I wasn't allowed to learn any of this Integer stuff. And as I rub my sobbing mother's back, I silently swore to myself to learn as much as I can about this world.

It wouldn't do for me to have zero information when I'm about to plan something for the long term.

The Least Common Denominator   Checkpoint I

I don't know how we managed to get out of that hell hole, but I guess we somehow did. "YYEAAAAHHHHH!!!!!" All around me, celebrations of victory spread all across my fellow people. Denominators, both young and old, all pranced around and cheered my name under the bright blue sky. *CRIMSON! CRIMSON! CRIMSON!* Blinking the drowsiness off of my eyes, I found myself waking up on... a horse cart? We were moving somewhere apparently, somewhere that's assuredly as far from the enemy presence as possible... Fuck... What happened... "Oh, you're awake..." Looking up towards my driver, I saw the familiar visage of Backus greeting me. He wasn't looking at me though; his attention still on the road as he drove the cart forward.

The Least Common Denominator   Interlude VII: Olivia III

Olivia was livid."Die, Heathen scum!"The young girl's blood boiled with unbridled hate for the man in front of her. She didn't know how or why the Prime was even screaming out that they were heathens, but one thing was for sure:They never did anything wrong.*KRAKATHOOM!*With a skill that she had honed through constant fighting and endless drills, Olivia sprang to action; intercepting the incoming strike as she ignored the theatrical lightning. Arya had inadvertently trained her to see faster than what she thought possible through their spats; the Prime endlessly goading her by dangling her sister's mental freedom in front of her."If you stand against the Natural Order, then you shall die alongside her!"A brief pause in combat occurred as Olivia sized up her opponent. His attacks might be lightning-fast, but she had the edge in terms of predicting his movement depending on his body's position. Already

The Least Common Denominator   XIII.III Ohm's Law

"Show yourself!" I cringed in horror as I watched our target shout out his threats with reckless abandon. The main thing that was making him dangerous was gone, but that didn't mean that we can finally drop our guards against him. That just meant that he wasn't a force of nature anymore. "Sis?" The lack of the storm didn't mean that the idiot wouldn't be able to puncture a vat full of metal anymore, it just meant that we had to goad him into hitting one. And that was easier said than done. *CRACK!* "Heathen!" *BOOM!* A bolt of lightning shot out from the idiot's dagger just as I was thinking about ways to kill him. The errant lightning collided with a nearby vat, making it spill its contents out into the v

The Least Common Denominator   XIII.II Ohm's Law

*CRACKLE! CRACKLE! CRACKLE!*"RUUUUUNNNNN!!!"With as much power as I could muster in my throat, I screamed the one word that would hopefully lead to the least amount of casualties as possible while the rest of my fellow Dens stuck to the plan of making shields out of glass. I really hope that I'm fucking remembering my physical properties right. Because if the shields don't work? We're going to fucking fry at the mercy of this homophobic crybaby!"'Livia!""Got it!"Like a well-oiled machine, Olivia and I quickly shot off into the distance, trying to put as much distance between us and the irate Prime as possible while trying to make sure that he didn't lose his interest in me by not hiding behind anything that would break his line of sight. I needed him to be thoroughly distracted for this to fucking work. And I sure hope like hell that my fellow Dens were fast enough to make the shields before we eventually got cau

The Least Common Denominator   XIII.I Ohm's Law

We're really in for it now, weren't we...Here we were, running for our lives as a veritable electric storm ravaged anyone stupid enough to not run away from the rampaging Prime. While Olivia and I were still slashing our way through some of the tin cans that opposed us, it all eventually gave way to everyone just running side by side, all in the name of not dying to a young adult throwing a hissy-fit because I was gay.And holy shit did I wish that I just made that whole thought blurb up.*CRACKLE! CRACKLE! CRACKLE!*"Do you have a plan yet, Sis?!" I heard Olivia scream at me as we continued our descent all the way back to the Furnace. "We're about a few minutes away from going back to where we started!"In an instant, I felt the gaze of over a hundred souls land squarely at my puny shoulders. Friend and foe alike all looked at me like I was the savior sent by God that would deliver us from death via electrocution. It was a lot

The Least Common Denominator   XII.VII Inverse Proportionality

It came as no surprise to me when I realized that I was gay. Well, technically lesbian, but semantics can go either way."That bitch! Spitting on our Mother's teachings even now!"I was probably fourteen when I realized that I constantly kept ogling my best friend and my other classmates when we changed clothes for P.E. class. Granted, no one knew that back then, but it was still a secret shame that I hold on to till today."You heretic! Not only are you a Dirt Eater, but you're a blasphemer as well!" the homophobic Prime screamed at the top of his boyish lungs. "You tainted my lazy Sister with your blasphemic ways!"I fought the urge to scoff at the inane accusation. On top of 'blasphemic' not even being a proper word, I wasn't even the one that initiated contact with the blue-bitch. She was the true blasphemer, not me since I never even had the chance to find a fellow lesbian in this world ever since I got here. Not to mention

The Least Common Denominator   Interlude V: Olivia II

Olivia frowned as she heard her sister laugh like criminal walking towards the gallows. "WE'LL GET OUT OF THIS ALIVE!"

The Least Common Denominator   IX.IV Differential Calculus

This was a problem. *CLANG! CLANG! STAB!* One-two parry quickly followed up by a visceral stab to the poor tin can's neck.

The Least Common Denominator   IX.III Differential Calculus

With a start, I took off; my feet almost leaping off the ground as we rushed ahead of our front line. The roaring heat of the surrounding vats washed through my face as each step felt like a lungful of humid, super-heated air; my hair

The Least Common Denominator   IX.II Differential Calculus

"Are you sure that would be wise?" I stared straight at Backus's face as he asked me the exact same question that I did to myself
