Laura

2:30PM was all I could think of throughout the day and as soon as it came through, I made to retire. The hell load of work plus my frantic effort to get ready for the Bronx trip was a pure definition stress. So, my desire to get home was justified.

I dropped by at a pet store to get hold of some catnip but one a second thought, decided against it. Sahara, my cat, had been giving me concern, and this morning was a drastic addition to my worry. He had retched his gut out; I needed not to be told to have him checked immediately. Since I wasn't sure of the problem with him, I ditched the thought of getting a catnip. That might worsen the situation.

Being friends with a vet doctor had many pros, one of them being that I got to be properly attended to even with cheap rates. Mike's clinic had become Sahara's second home as I always dropped him there before getting to work. Hopefully, everything would turn out well with Sahara so that he could strut around as he use to.

The words, Animal Palace, boldly written on the signpost, brought a sense of familiarity to me.

"Hey." I said, shutting the door close.

"Hey...Laura."

The look on his face told me something was going on in his mind.

"What?" I shot.

"You look–"

"Heinous," I added. "Isn't it?"

"No, that's huge." He laughed light.

"Then what is it?"

"You just don't look you"

"Well, you said the same thing." He laughed again, harder this time. And I couldn't help but stare at the dimple on his right cheek.

Would it be wrong to want such, even if it's a tiny dot?

Mike was a guy with the killer looks. I didn't know about others but for me, dimples—deep dimples, a jet black hair tapering at the nape, a lean physique and most importantly, dark eyes embellished with thick bushy brows, counted as beauty...masculine beauty to me. And did I forget to mention my adversity to facial hair? Thankfully, Mike was usually clean shaven although I could see that a bit of stubble was sprouting around his jaw.

I mentally nudged myself when I realised I'd been smiling. Smiling at him.

"Uhm, how's Sahara?" I finally spoke in a desperate attempt to clear the awkward atmosphere I'd created.

"He's better now," he said as he rose to get my cat. He returned with Sahara resting comfortably in his arms and handed him over to me.

"Oh buddy, buddy, buddy. Mike took care of ya when I was gone?" I cooed, stroking his brown fur.

"What was wrong with him?" I asked not taking my eyes off Sahara.

"He had some sort of poisoning."

"Poisoning!" I yelped.

"It's nothing really serious. I'm gonna give you some medicine that'll help with the symptoms."

"I'm so sorry, buddy. Everything will be fine." I looked up from my cat and smiled at Mike. "Thanks."

"It's nothing." He flashed a smile. He got back inside to get the medicines and returned soon enough to take a seat beside me.

"You were in a hurry today," he pointed out, bringing me to recall my kangaroo hop to work, today. I'd earlier stormed into the clinic, asking Mike to check up on Sahara. I'd been consumed in my attempt to get to work in time, that I failed to properly say hello to Mike.

"Yeah. I'm sorry I didn't even say hi, earlier."

"You know you've got to take it easy...seriously. It's really tellin' on ya." He looked concerned.

"Thanks." After a pause, I asked. "Uhm, how much for the service?"

"Are you kiddin' me?"

"No, I'm asking." There went his laugh again. I couldn't help but join him.

"What do you take me for, Laura? C'mon, what the hell are friends for?"

"Friends are meant to appreciate one another." I dug my hand inside my purse and shoved some bills into his breast pocket, not minding the resistance.

"Are you for real now?"

"See you later, Mike. Thanks for everything." I turned to the door, not forgetting the look on his face.

The False Facade   CHAPTER FORTY

LauraIt was a Tuesday afternoon. I didn't know what to do with my life. I was so bored. And I felt useless. Mrs. Alonso had gone to get some groceries. Her son, Jose, was in school. Nobody was at home. I was practically home alone. Then, I idea struck me. I had to invite Faith over. So, I placed a call to her, asking her to come over. She did, and I couldn't be happier."Hey, girl." She engulfed me in a hug. She looked beautiful. Her hair was shorter, that meant that she had a hair cut. She work leather pants and a leather jacket. That was Faith, always slaying."I'm glad you came." I said, almost in a cry."Uh, that's because you are bored, right?""Of course, not." I countered. "I wanted to see you.""Oh, yeah?""Yeah? You don't believe me."She shrugged. "Whatever. So, you hav

The False Facade   CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

Laura By the time I was done baking, I was smoldering hot. All my body was glistening with sweet. Not saying that baking was a task, of course not. I enjoyed doing it. The issue, however, as that it was time taking, and energy consuming. Thankfully and luckily for me, Mrs. Alonso was here to help. "I'll go have a shower now," I said to Mrs. Alonso. She nodded and walked into the room. My shower was pretty quick. I made sure I washed my hair properly. After doing that, I realised the blonde colour was beginning to fade. What I did, I quickly dried myself and left the shower. Then, I started dying my hair I anew. I knew deep down within me that dying my hair each time wasn't healthy. It had been something terrible for one of my college friends. The girl wasn't in love with her natural ginger red hair. What she did, she dyed her hair coffee brown just because the guy she was crushing on appeared to like dark hai

The False Facade   CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

Blake The steward scribbled something, our other I guessed, on his paper and faced Laura. "What can I get you, ma'am?" "Uhm, cookies and a glass of milk." I looked at Laura and she became defensive, replying with, "What?" I shrugged. The steward strode off to get our orders. This time, Laura looked at me. "Why do you judge?" "Judge? I didn't judge." "Of course, you did," she said, "by giving me that look." "What look?" I asked.

Blake I saw how her brows furrowed together. It was clear that she didn't understand my question. My question had clearly taken her aback. "About the dinner." I added to clear out her confusion. "Oh," she gave a nervous, quite embarrassed, laugh. "Well, if you want me to." I smiled, letting my eyes move dreamily around her. Laura was pretty. There was no denying that fact or statement. She had very sharp eyes, and I believed it was the colour---its hazel, greenish tint colour---that accounted for that. Her fake blonde hair blared against the dim light, and for some odd reasons, I found myself craving to see her in her natural hair: deep brunette.

The False Facade   CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

Laura "So, tell me. What do you want from my brother?" She spelled out the words more. She was close now, her face pinned up to me. I couldn't believe this was happening. I just couldn't believe I'd fallen into Daya's trap. I mean, how could I have been that gullible to believe she wanted us to form a good relationship? Why had I been so stupid. She gave me the look that suggested I was keeping her waiting, and she wanted me to go on with an answer. Thing was, no word was forthcoming. The shock and bemusement was just too much for me to handle."Of course, you won't say anything." Daya finally said, "What in the world was I thinking?"She shot daggers with my ears, gave a faint hissed and turned to leave. I could see her shake her head in disappointment as she left the door.Wh

"Hi, Olive," Courtney's voice cut me out of my thoughts. I glanced up at her to find her standing in front of me. She wore a cream coloured T-shirt, and a loosely fit shorts. I smiled in response. She sat across me. "How do you see the dinner?" "Ugh. Awesome. It's more than I imagined." "Oh, yeah?" she replied, smiling. "I'm glad you like it." "Oh, I do." I took a sip from my drink. "Barbecues are wonderful." "Yes, they are. But you guys have BBQ nights in the States, right?"
