A new day

A warm sensation, as well as the feeling of touching hair, the boy jerked up panicky from the floor with drops of cold sweat flowing from his forehead. He hurriedly left the room and returned, holding a lightened candle in his hand that brightened a little the room. A woman was lying face down at its center surrounded by scattered opened books, a sight that almost made the boy drop his candle.

She is alive; he thought as he checked her breathing, putting the candle on the floor and trying to raise her and put her on the bed. He was exhausted, though. Carrying the woman until the bed, he could hardly keep his footing, collapsing, in the end, on the bitterly cold floor.

No! I have to get up!

However, his body wouldn't listen to him. He was devoid of strength.

"I have to get up! I have to get up..." He kept on muttering as his eyelids began to close.

...

...

"Wake up, sleepyhead! It's already morning!" The Great Shaman shouted with a singing voice.

"That geezer... Ouch! My body hurts everywhere."

Seeing Sirius's sleepy expression become pained and then start yawning again, a small laugh escaped from the man's mouth.

"I heard that you finally made some new friends. I was a little worried when I saw in what kind of state you returned yesterday, but I guess you just played a little more than usual?"

"Is this how friends play with each other here? No, more importantly, how do you even know what happened yesterday?"

"Haha, I 'll leave that to your imagination. Don't worry! Starting today, you'll learn how to put some fight, or at least become more durable..." The Great Shaman commented with a mysterious smile while gesturing at the boy to sit at the table.

Do they plan on torturing me? Sirius shivered upon thinking the imminent training he would start today.

"By the way, I'll have to leave for a few days, so you'll have to take care of yourself on your own for a little time. I have agreed with a woman from the village to bring you food every day. The problem is..."

"Don't worry about me. I can handle several nights," Sirius suddenly said, knowing why the Great Shaman was anxious about leaving him alone.

"Don't be stubborn and listen to me. I have already talked to your friend's parents, I am talking about that girl, Nerida, and you can stay over there until I return."

Sirius felt a little touched. The Great Shaman never stopped looking after him despite the problems he had created for him. For one year, he remained by his side, holding his hand at nights until he fell asleep, delaying his many responsibilities in order not to leave him alone.

"No... Let me try! Please! If I become afraid of the darkness again, I promise I'll go to Nerida then."

"Why do you continue being stubborn about this! You have no reason..."

"I can't keep on being scared. I have to stop running away from my fears, or I'll never become strong. Please... Father!"

This boy...

It was the first time he called him like that. Not calling him geezer or old man, but a father. How hard he had tried to win his trust, only he knew the answer.

"Alright, alright. Leave! You shouldn't make the Chief wait for you."

"Have a nice trip, old man," with the man's consent, Sirius hurriedly exited the hut with a triumphant smile on his face.

"What I'll do with him," the Great Shaman muttered while wiping the tears from his eyes.

...

...

Walking through the village had been one of Sirius's favorite diversions since his first day in the tribe. He loved the liveness of the outside, the picturesque scenery of lush green around him, but most importantly, how his strolling reminded him every time that he had escaped from his prison, his previous world. The village wasn't that big, allowing him to quickly become familiar with its structure, knowing his destination's exact location. The Chief's house was located at its center and was the largest house in the whole village. It was made of wood, and like the other buildings, it was built around a circular courtyard. The villagers' main occupations were hunting and fishing, while they were also farming in their yards. They lived a self-sufficient life, peaceful and enviable.

Sirius began hearing shouts as he approached the house. Walking closer towards its courtyard, he saw a muscular man with tattoos in his whole body yelling at two boys. Despite he could only see their backs because of their position, Sirius still recognized one of them as he was the one he fought with yesterday, Ajamu. His steps also attracted the attention of the trio, making them turn their heads to the boy.

"What are you doing here!" Ajamu shouted upon seeing Sirius, but a punch suddenly landed on the top of his head.

"Stop embarrassing me, idiot, and shut up!" The muscular man roared at him before turning to the boy with a big smile.

"You must be, Astar! I remember your face from when you landed that night from the skies. I wanted to meet you sooner, but I never found the time to do it in the end.

"No, it is this youngster's fault for not coming to pay my respects even though I have been in the village for almost a year," Sirius hurriedly said while lowering his head.

"Haha, you have a silver tongue, don't you? Speaking so eloquently in only one year, you are truly amazing! I wish my two sons to become as smart as you one day, but that is just wishful thinking," the man said with a laugh.

"Maybe because we took after you," the other boy muttered softly. Unfortunately for him, the man's hearing seemed to be sharp as he threw him a punch similar to one he gave to Ajamu.

"What will I do with these two... Anyway! I am glad that you are here, Astar! Come inside! Hey, Juno, Sarah! We have visitors! Come out!"

What a delightful person! Sirius thought as he entered. Seeing how nicely he bullied Ajamu, he had already had a favorable impression of him.

At the same time, one woman and one girl also came out from the wooden house. The boy could hardly contain his amazement when he saw them. Not because of their stunning beauty and their porcelain faces, but because of the navy-blue color of their hair. It didn't look like fake, no, it was undoubtedly their natural color, transfusing them an ethereal feeling, like they were fairies that came out from a fairy tale.

"Hey, bastard! Don't look at my sister like that," Ajamu, who noticed Sirius's astonishment snarled as he poked him with his elbow. That guy had already taken his woman from him, now he wanted and his sister? He was indeed a beast!

"Didn't I tell you to shut up? What's the matter with you, you are stupider than usual," the man said with a sigh while giving him another punch.

"Astar, this is my wife, Juno, and my daughter, Sarah, and these are my two sons, Anders and Ajamu, who I think you should already know," the Chief said with a provocative smile that Sirius found it annoying. There was no doubt that the last part of the sentence was an intimation for yesterday's incident. Not even a day had passed since then, how did everyone know?

"As for that boy, his name is Astar. You have probably already heard stories about him. Since I have not immediate responsibilities these days, I plan to train him from today onwards.

"What? You'll train him?" Ajamu couldn't help than shout, instantly regretting his words and trying to guard his head, but the Chief just stared at him with amusement this time.

"Yes! You should give your all in training from here on. You wouldn't want him to surpass you, right?"

"There is no way something like this can happen," he replied casually but was actually staring dagger at Sirius.

"Please, forgive that boy, Astar. He has grown up used to be admired by his peers, making him arrogant, but he is, in reality, a kind boy," Juno said softly while looking at Ajamu with affection.

Witnessing the family's warmth, Sirius couldn't help than feel jealous. It was like admiring a beautiful painting from afar, only watching from a distance, but being incapable of being part of it. He was hungry for love and affection but was forced to stay alone for most of his life instead. This night wouldn't be different. When he returns in the hut, the Great shaman won't be there this time.

"I think that's enough for the introductions. Let's talk about you now, Astar. Honestly, your body is in a worse condition than I initially thought. For now, the most important thing is to make your body become used in training. Since it's the first day, I won't be cruel with you."

That is a relief! That geezer must have wanted to scare me!

"Let's do a warm-up with a little running. Let's see... How about running around the village ten times?"

"What?"

The Brightest Star   A dangerous person

"Halt! Stop! Stop, bastards!" The surprising sudden curses forced the crowd to cease their actions temporarily. The excited mob, as well as Apollyon, turned their attention, baffled, towards the two newcomers that had just rushed here with flushed faces. "What the hell are you doing? Are you trying to destroy the village's reputation?" The Chief began shouting, enraged, upon witnessing the spectacle occurring in front of his eyes. He and the Great Shaman came to check the reason for the disturbance happening in the island's sacred place, only to see that his people were about to lynch a boy in public near their deity's home! The Chief thought he would go mad. If other tribes learned about this embarrassing incident, the Dragon Village would definitely become the topic of ridicule during the gatherings between the four tribes."Are you mad? Do you know where we are? Do you want to provoke the Dragon God's wrath? And what's the matter with this situati

The Brightest Star   Conclusion

"I am not sure. Wouldn't you say I have a serious reason to harbor resentment towards you?" "Of course not!" The Dragon God replied immediately, expecting to hear that particular answer from the boy. "Certainly, I ordered the tribe to kill you, but let me ask you instead... If I asked you to commit suicide, would you do it?" "I would not, but someone from the tribe might have done it." "Then, supposing I order a man to commit suicide, and he actually does it, who is the one to blame for his death? Me or him?" Apollyon didn't grimace upon hearing that absurd question but closed his eyes instead for a few seconds in thought before opening them again to glare at the dragon. "That's sophistry. You can't deceive me with such a ridiculous argument, but I'll admit that your words contain some truth inside them. The people from the tribe are deeply faithful to you to the point that their belief is making them fana

The Brightest Star   The ending of the trial

"Your revenge was aimless and chaotic. You recklessly began murdering people, and in the end, you even lost your sole family. You and I are vastly different. You had a choice to live a peaceful life. Your mother had already taken care of your enemies, as well as the reason for your hatred. But you were arrogant. You couldn't endure that those weak humans managed to slay someone from your race. You had to teach them a lesson. Unlike you, though, my enemy is still alive. Μy parents are dead, and my few remaining relatives who are still alive, as well as my friends, all betrayed me. You had a future. You had a choice. However, I have nothing!" Apollyon fearlessly said, even raising his voice to the terrifying creature in front of him. "Don't try to justify your hatred. You might think that your emotions have greater importance than mine, but like you, the same way you regard my old hatred as a joke, I also consider the reason for your revenge pointless. Ultimately, you

"For you right now, the present is the most important thing to you. Emotions have the biggest priority regarding the process of your actions. Acting true to your heart is not necessarily bad, but it is not necessarily a good thing either. The most important thing you should bear in mind if you survive this place is always to be aware of the consequences. You might think you are invincible because of your young age, but a person who can't restrain his rage is not strong. He is a fragile person instead." Apollyon pretended to listen to the creature's advice carefully. Its words, though, went in his one ear and out the other. He couldn't help it, though. The dragon's babbling seemed nothing more than lecturing to the boy. "I was once like you," the dragon suddenly said, having realized that the boy was not paying attention to it. "You? No way!" Apollyon, whose interest was sparked, shouted, surprised, not believing what he had just heard.

"I don't blame neither of them, though. Nor do I look down on them. Even if I was in their position, I doubt I could fair better with the trial. I would probably have given up," the dragon remarked while shaking its head. Even for a creature like itself that had experienced almost everything this world had to offer, lacked the wisdom and the intelligence to find the answer to the trial that its God assigned to it with its charge. It often wondered that maybe the Gods created the trial only because they just wanted to pull pranks on the mortals. To teach them about despair, about the helplessness when acting against fate. "Even my age-long life can't exist forever. Noone can't trick death forever, even if it's me. So as my end is finally coming closer, I hope I can witness a one of a kind miracle before I close my eyes for the last time." That was the deepest and only wish of the creature that had spent the biggest part of its life playing the guard's role i

What an incredible sight! Apollyon thought as he witnessed the miraculous spectacle of the lush vegetation filling almost the whole room. His eyes wandered excitedly around the appetizing familiar vegetables that were growing unperturbed from their natural enemies, as well as the bizarre, colorful flowers that their pleasant scent was wafting inside the room. And while he continued to explore the place, at some moments, he would stop to try out some of the delectable vivid red tomatoes which were growing inside the surprisingly well-kept soil, and at others, he would pick up any strange looking flower that caught his eye and sniff at it. He kept on examining his surroundings in this way until his leg touched some kind of solid substance hidden under the thick greenery of the plants, making him turn his attention towards the ground. A human figure was lying down on the dirt, a skeleton that had been abandoned for who knows of how many years in this room. See

The Brightest Star   The beginning of the trial

"Welcome, boy, to my humble accommodation, the place in which the trial of blood and fire will be held. Among the one hundred seventy-three people who have taken part in this trial, you are the third person who had managed to pass my test and arrive here," the dragon declared while its expression

The Brightest Star   The outcome of the choice

"You want to destroy the paths? I don't understand what you mean," the dragon remarked while looking at the boy with a strange expression. "I mean, exactly what I say. I want to destroy these paths I was supposed to choose between them. No, if I have to be more specific, I want to de

The Brightest Star   The weight of a choice

The dragon looked with amusement at the boy whose face was filled with happiness and pride. Simultaneously, its opinion of him also somewhat rose compared to its initial evaluation of him. Dragons had always been arrogant creatures that looked down on the other races. Still, they were also beings

He saw the fiery blue flames approaching him; the raging fire was about to devour him, yet, Apollyon never tried to move. The boy stood still, determined, his face expressionless. Apollyon opened his arms, extending them as much more as he could, indicating that he wasn't afraid of the imminent c
