Chapter 8

Author: Pamela
Covered in a thick layer of snow, Wu City was so beautiful that it was almost beyond words. I wandered the street among the numerous shops in the snow, dressed in a golden gown with a pure white long coat. The delicate silver earrings I wore that day matched somewhat perfectly with my make-up.

It was such a busy city. Standing among the crowd rushing in every direction, I felt like an outsider. I stared at all the people passing by, while the cold wind carried the snowflakes and landed on my face, my hair, and my clothes. However, I didn't feel cold at all. Maybe I was numb. Maybe I had something more important to do. I started following an average-looking man on the street.

While he stood there smoking by himself, I gathered all my courage and approached him with my bank card in hand. I opened my mouth to talk and my voice sounded humble. "Would you like to date me for three months? I'll give you five million in return."

Stunned by my request, he looked at me as if I was a fool. After a long silence, he said, "Sorry, I already have a girlfriend."

What a shame! I had only approached him because I had thought he was alone.

"I see. It's fine. Thank you."

I walked away in disappointment. Soon, I found a second chance. There was another man nearby who was not particularly good-looking. It seemed that someone like him would definitely not reject me, so I approached him with the five million I had.

Maybe that was exactly why he treated me like I was crazy.

"Could you please date me?"

"Are you alright? Do you need a doctor? Should I contact your family for you?"

I smiled awkwardly and replied, "No, I'm fine. Thank you. I think I'll just ask around."

I found another person. "Could you please date me?"

"I'm sorry..."

I was not sure what to do anymore. I just wanted to date someone. I wanted to be loved. Love had been nothing but a strange word for me...

I was dying to know what it was like to be happy...

I had never felt loved by my ex-husband. What I had once felt was a venomous jealousy for Gwen Worth, but now even that was gone.

I approached another person, trying my luck with my head hanging low. "Could you please date me?"

It was a woman who replied in a surprised tone. "It's you indeed, my sister-in-law!"

I raised my head in astonishment to see that the person in front of me was Cici Gregg.

Standing right next to her was Dixon, my ex-husband. He was wearing a glacial expression as usual.

It was so embarrassing that I wanted to bury my head in the sand. Cici went on saying, "Brother Dixon and I saw you from afar. We were wondering what you were saying to those random passers-by. That was why we came closer..."

Running away seemed to be the only option right then. As I turned to escape the scene, Dixon grabbed me by my wrist and pulled me away. Cici started asking where we were going but Dixon simply told her, "Go home. Don't tell anyone what you've seen today." His voice sounded extremely impatient.

Cici kept on asking, "What about the concert tonight?"

This time, he did not even reply. My wrist was hurting from his grip. "Let go!"

However, he ignored my protest and only let me go after we arrived at a parking lot.

Rubbing my wrists, which were already slightly swollen, I watched him light up a cigarette and start smoking. He sounded cold and distant when he finally spoke. "Caroline Shaw, what do you think you're doing?"

I had suffered too much in the so-called marriage and now I had no intention of putting up with him any longer. Come to think of it, there was really nothing for me to lose at this point, so I told him straightforwardly, "Didn't you see? I was looking for someone to date me."

"I didn't know you'd wind up like this."

"Like what?"

Taken aback by my aggressive attitude, he seemed a little awkward and uncomfortable. He cleared his throat as he threw away the cigarette end and went to the car. He soon discovered that the car was broken as he tried to start it, so he turned to ask me, "Did you drive here?"

It felt like he was finally treating me like an acquaintance instead of an enemy. Disgust and hatred had disappeared from his gaze, and instead there was even a hint of gentleness. This new look of his stirred up some incomprehensive feelings in me. Without much time to think it through, I answered, "No, I took the bus here."

Hearing that, he got out of the car and called one of his men to arrange for a repair, then dragged me along to take the bus. The funny thing was he didn't have coins or smaller notes, so he took out a hundred-yuan note from his leather wallet and shoved it into the box for the bus fare.

Even the driver turned to check him out as if he was one of those rich people who had money to burn.

There were many passengers on the bus, making it very crowded. Dixon led me to the middle section and let me lean against the window while blocking people from my side with his body and arms. It was such a sweet thing to do. Unfortunately, it was just odd that he was only doing it after our divorce. The picturesque snowy scenery outside the window seemed to be illustrating my sorrow for me. I asked him in a low voice, "Dixon, we're divorced. Why are you doing this now?"

A sudden stop made me bump into him hard. My heart almost skipped a beat, but I didn't think it was from the stop itself. After a short moment of hesitation, I wrapped my arms around him and said softly, "Dixon, I'm wearing high heels. I don't want to fall. Let me hold onto you. It won't take long."

I didn't even notice how humble and vulnerable I sounded at that moment, as if the possibility of being rejected frightened me.

I liked him. It was a fact that couldn't be changed by our divorce.

My tiny world collapsed and reformed around him whenever he showed up.

Realizing that, I couldn't help but tighten my grip. I wanted to hide in his arms for as long as possible, but I managed to contain myself. I looked up at him and happened to see him staring at me, his gaze clear and gentle. I asked him in a low voice, "How's everything going with Gwen Worth?"

"What?" He sounded puzzled.

I pressed my lips together and asked, "Will you get married?"

We fell into silence with only the sound of each other breathing to be heard. I kept staring straight into his eyes. After a long while, he replied with a faint sigh, as if he had caved in to my persistence, "I still owe her a wedding."

I loosened my grip and smiled at him. "When is it going to be?"

He stared at me for a long while and then answered, "On the second day of the first Chinese lunar month."

That would be right after the Chinese New Year's Day.

I would probably have ceased to exist by then.

My smile was sincere and my voice was sweet. "Congratulations, Dixon."

Surprisingly, Dixon's expression changed drastically upon my reply. He held me tightly by my arm and leaned forward to be closer to me. There was a skeptical look on his face as he asked me in a low voice, "Why were you asking people to date you?"

Never End   Chapter 226

No wonder Zachary could pinpoint my exact location and appear right beside me every single time. It turned out that the cellphone he gifted me had a GPS tracker installed. When I first met him, he already decided to keep an eye on me.I felt uncomfortable as I thought about that.Zachary was indifferent when he heard my complaint. He simply explained, “It was to ensure your safety. I also installed a GPS tracker on my own phone. If it bothers you, you can get another phone.”Even though being spied on was a serious matter to me, it was ordinary to Zachary. Then again, there were also advantages to him knowing my whereabouts. He would be able to come to my rescue, right on time, just like that night by the seaside. If he was not there, I could not imagine what would have happened to me.Zachary placed the bowl of noodles on the dining table and went upstairs right after. After I slowly finished the meal, I went back to his bedroom. When I pushed the door open, Zachary was not aro

Zachary was speechless at my comment.I continued asking, “Is she staying in the Schick family home?”“Yes, at the Schick family’s old mansion.”I noticed that Zachary had more patience for me than before; he would answer every question I asked. Was it because of the change in our relationship? Was it because now that I was his woman, he had more patience for me?I wanted to ask him more questions, but when I turned my eyes to Zachary, his face was dark and gloomy. His mood seemed low when we talked about the Schick family’s old mansion. Did it remind him of something sad?Joshua mentioned that every time Zachary returned to the old mansion, he would always get hurt. Why would he always get hurt?!His ninth stepmother feared him, so who else would hurt him?I was tempted to ask, but I did not want to further ruin his mood. Thus, I stayed silent instead. It was late at night when we finally reached the Schick family home and Zachary casually parked his car by the roadside. The

He said, “We don’t have to be strangers.”Even though he was the one that pushed me away.I ignored him, drove, and left the hospital.Joshua was stunned with disbelief at my actions. When Joshua sent me a new message, I had not driven far yet.[Joshua: My goodness, you’re the first to treat Second Brother like that! Oh my God, and Second Brother wasn’t even angry! ][Caroline: I’m really busy.][Joshua: Second Brother must have rejected you, so now you’re angry and ignoring him. You think you can fool me?][Caroline: …]I stopped replying to Joshua and went back to my condo, frustrated. I felt depressed when I got home, so I went out again and drove to a nearby riverbank. Then, I spent the whole day sitting in the breeze until the sky turned dark. The riverbank at night was enchanting, so I sat there a while, listening to tracks on my headset until I lost track of the time. Then, a clear voice broke my reverie. “Are you hiding from me?”A few days ago, he was the one who w

I asked the doctor worriedly, “How long more will it take?”“At most, half a month.”When Clifford heard the doctor, he was startled. He did not even dare enter her hospital room. I could see Elaine staring blankly outside the window when I went in to visit her.“Clifford is at the entrance,” I reminded her.“Mmm, just let him leave.”I sat by her side and said, “He wants you to forgive him.”Elaine firmly said, “Impossible.”She held a firm stance. There was no room for bargaining.Yet a few days ago, she told me that she loved Clifford.“What’s the reason?”“Miss Shaw, I do love him. However, in life, it’s not enough to only have love. Other than that, there’s still dignity, principle, boundaries, and self-love. My dignity and principle tell me that I should never forgive him.”She suddenly turned to me. “I’m not like you. I can’t easily give into reality and forgive my previous hurt. Miss Shaw, if we could still return to how it was, even with such pain, then does that me

“Miss Shaw, your heart already belongs to Zachary. You can’t just find a way to sever all ties with Dixon yet.”Elaine’s voice echoed in my mind. “You could only reject Dixon because your heart already belongs to Zachary.”I definitely had to talk to Dixon.I took a deep breath. “But Zachary doesn’t love me.”“Miss Shaw, that’s a big misunderstanding!” Elaine held my hand tightly, warmly smiling. “No man would treat a woman that he doesn’t care about like that! That’s only because love is blind, but as a bystander, I see everything! When it comes to an especially stubborn, protective man like Zachary, his love for you may be deeper than you could ever imagine.”Elaine’s words gave me hope. “Then why does he keep rejecting me? He even wanted me to erase the memory of our moment together.”Elaine’s eyes were as clear as glass. “Have you ever considered that maybe something to do with you?”I was surprised. “What issue?”“Zachary has the personality of a typical strong, powerful l

“Let me go,” I said in a low voice. He remained silent, as if he had not heard me.I could tell he was definitely not asleep. This was the first time I had given him the cold shoulder. “Let me go. I will stop bothering you and stop speaking out of turn!”I never thought that he would be so heartless, but I was sure that if I did not make myself clear, he would not let me leave.Zachary opened his eyes. “Let her go,” he said, unconcerned.I could not stand Zachary’s indifference anymore. I turned my back to him and hurriedly left, hoping that I would no longer be involved with him.I was terrified of him when he was like this.He was completely heartless. When I reached my condominium, Yara called me. “I’m going to travel around the world, so I won’t be back to Tong City anytime soon,” she happily announced. “I parked your car in front of the pub.”I was in a terrible mood when I went to the pub to collect the car. When I returned to my condo, Elaine suddenly came across my mi

Zachary was my only lifesaver.I only had that little left in my life.I crawled to him helplessly before the stunned crowd. I opened up my arms and sweetly called out to him.I was afraid he might reject me. I had to be persuasive.Zachary was immaculate as he walked up and looked down to me, h

I was stunned when I heard it. I took out my handphone and dialed Dixon; his phone was still turned off. Then, I called his assistant, who finally picked up.I asked, coldly, "Where is he?""We’re at the church, Mrs. Gregg."He still called me 'Mrs. Gregg'.Just like when we just met three years

Ever since that morning when Dixon mentioned that he had asked Henry the night before, I knew I could not hide from him. He would definitely rush to Wu City to get me back to S City.I sighed. "I remember.""If you remember, then why didn’t you call me?"Henry looked displeased. I told him my wo

I answered the call. "Anything?"Wendy was furious on the phone, persistently criticizing me, "Caroline, why would you tell my dad about our personal feud? You’re no different from kids who get bullied and tattle to the adults, are you? You’re so childish. You really can't admit defeat and now, you
