Chapter 69

Jessica looked toward where Blake pointed.

There was an open plaza with an artificial fountain just outside the café. From the angle that they were viewing it from, one could barely make out the faint rainbow that was cast into the air.

“See, I’m not lying right?”

Jessica let out a slight burst of laughter, a sign of her recovering mood.

Thomas then said, “Since there’s nothing to do here, why don’t you guess as to what they’re doing?”

He pointed to a young man and woman at the plaza and asked, “What kind of relationship do you think those two have?”

Jessica took a closer look, the young man had a pleasing smile as if trying to explain something. The young woman had a stern look on her face, she moved two steps ahead, stopped, and then continued walking a few more steps in the same direction. The young man followed her as she did all of that repeatedly. This went on for quite a while.

“Are they a couple? A couple who’s arguing?” Jessica asked.

“Nope, both of them have no relationship whatsoever.” Thomas corrected. “The young man has a job of spreading flyers. He gave the young lady one of the flyers, hoping to invite her to his workplace to get experience. The young lady seems to be convinced, yet hesitant. Picking up on the signs he observes, the young man is attempting to convince her more.”

Jessica was shocked, that was impossible! They clearly seem like they were in a fight.

When she turned over to take another look, the young lady had already left. The young man had a frustrated look on his face as he walked back to where he was standing. He then smiled, took out another flyer from his pocket, and proceeded to find someone else that would be interested.

When she saw the flyer, Jessica had a realization.

“You’re messing with me,” she replied.

Having sat here for such a long time, surely he had already known before asking.

Thomas merely shrugged and took a sip of coffee.

“This is why, when you cannot hear what they’re talking about, you wouldn’t know unless you’re willing to observe them. The same goes for me, I wouldn’t know the young man is distributing flyers until I take a closer look.”

“Yet in this world, not everyone will want to spend the time to understand someone’s body language and gestures to guess what they are trying to express.”

“Then again, the example I gave you just now is not really a good one, but I trust that you get my point.”

Jessica, having understood what he meant, gestured as such.

“Yes, I understand. I was acting impulsively just now,” she said.

She already had this disability her whole life, blaming herself at that point was only going to bring more harm than good.

Thomas nodded in acknowledgment. While fiddling with the coffee mug handle, he said, “So, are you willing to share with me what made you so angry?”

Jessica’s lips moved and her arms reached for the glass pot to pour herself a cup of tea.

She took a mouthful of tea, turned, and looked outside the window.

The tea leaves had a certain fragrance to it, yet it gave out a mildly bitter taste, just like her current mood.

Thomas gazed upon the side of her face, her pale skin looking ever so stunning even under the sun’s embrace. However, it seemed as though a veil of sadness was laid upon it, giving her a depressing appearance.

“Is he not treating you well?”

Thomas recalled the first time he met Jessica, which was at a small park near his house.

Blake Ferguson, a man worthy of his name, ever stoic.

In front of others, that man dared ridicule and humiliate his wife, showing no remorse.

The days that Jessica spent with him, one could hardly describe it as full of bliss.

At that point within his thoughts, a strange emotion began to fill Thomas’s heart. Unknown to himself, his hands had already clumped into a fist.

Jessica, who was staring in a daze at the fountain, focused her gaze back on both of them.

“Do you want to know about my story?”

She was startled a bit by that question. Looking at him, she did not know what he was planning to tell her.

“When we first met, do you still remember what your husband told you?” Thomas asked.

Again, Jessica froze. Her mouth moved, yet she was unsure of how to answer the question.

What Blake told her, she never let it slip past her mind.

He told her that Thomas Wayne … likes married women.

Jessica shot him a strange and suspicious gaze. Knowing him all this while, she always thought of him as a man of honor, a fine gentleman so to speak. She never knew how those rumors of him spread.

Jessica replied, “You don’t have to bother yourself with what he said.”

Thomas grinned. “However, some of them are true.”

With a gaping mouth, Jessica looked at him bemusedly, wondering whether he was aware of the words coming out of his mouth.

Thomas took a sip of coffee and looked outward beyond the window as if recalling something from the past. About two seconds later, he turned his head back facing Jessica and told her, “My sister in law used to be my girlfriend.”

“Just like your family the Scotts, the Higgins family is also a well-known one as well, and just like you, they wanted to strengthen relations with the Wayne family. Unfortunately, since I’m not the chosen heir of the family, she was forced to be wed to my elder brother.”

“She never got along well with my elder brother. All because of me … because I didn’t protect her well enough. Feeling responsible for what she is going through right now, I’ve been taking care of her ever since.”

At that moment, Thomas let out a bitter smile. “It can’t be helped, in families like ours, once word spreads about things like this, it gets twisted into different versions to become the rumors you hear. Hence, these rumors hold a certain amount of truth in them.”

Jessica frowned.

“If that’s the case, why tell me all this?” she asked.
