Chapter 4

Well, my subconscious self had been right. It seems she knows me more than I know myself.

You must be thinking what could have gone wrong. Plenty did.

I am starting to think that maybe, just maybe Liza was right.

Nobody would want me to work for him and even if they let me I was going to ruin it like I ruined this one.

They had given me the job and I was wearing my uniform and helping Katherine throughout the day.

It was just 30 minutes before closing time when Katherine asked me to do my first job alone.

She asked me to kill a chicken.

As simple as the job was I fucked up.

I had put the knife on the  chicken's neck and slaughtered it forgetting to cut whatever still keeps it alive.          

Then I went to cupboard area to change my clothes.

Coming out I heard some noises. It sounded like people running about and shouting.

What first came to my mind was that there was an attack by an assassin sent to kill the senator so I picked a knife and slowly made my way outside the kitchen.

Just as I suspected people were running about, but not trying to run away from something.

Trying to catch something.

What could it be?

I spotted a girl of about my age standing on the chair and screaming her lungs out.

Maybe the senator's daughter.

Finally I caught sight of the thing they were all chasing and it turned out to be the chicken I killed.

Well, almost killed.

If I had killed it I don't think it'd be running around like that except if it was possessed.

By then the men had caught it and the senator had come out after hearing the commotion.

'Who set the chicken loose?'. He shouted. I thought of running now that I still had the chance to live but thought better of it.

I looked at the wicked looking bodyguards around the senator and swallowed.

The girl made her way towards the senator and clung to him. Probably scared of another chicken sent to assassinate her.

So childish.

Shut up! Now's not the time to talk

Whatever.

'Who? Don't let me repeat myself'.

My hands flew up. I had to look up to confirm it's my hand because my head had started spinning.

The girl had to point at my direction before her dad could see my hands.

Probably because he wasn't with his glasses.

Did he even use glasses?

How was I supposed to know.

Anyways when his gaze met mine he glared at me icily. Probably expecting me to freeze under his gaze but when I did nothing like that he finally gave up and motioned for me to come closer.

My legs started to move forward even Maya was screaming at me to turn and run away.

I finally stepped in front of him.

'So, you intentionally set the chicken loose to scare my baby huh?'.

Baby?

What is this old man talking about, who is his--

Hmm maybe the girl beside him but seriously, this grown up, a baby?

Maybe she is, after all she jumped on a chair because of a chicken.

'I've never seen you here before, do you work here?'.

'Yes'.

'Are you new?'.

'Yes'.

'Did you loose the chicken intentionally to scare me?'.

'Yes'.

She looked taken aback.

'You did it intentionally?'.

'Yes'.

'Get the hell away from here'.

'OK'.

I turned on my heels.

'Wait, come back'. She called and I turned.

'Aren't you going to punish her'. She said to senator. What was his name again.... Yes...Drenthe. Senator Drenthe.

He thought for a while. 'No, let her be. Striping her off her job is enough'.

'OK, whatever you say'.

'Now be off with you'.

And that was it.

'Did you get a job?'.

That was my step mother giving me a warm welcome.

Isn't she too nice?

Yep, that's my step mother, so nice and welcoming.

'Hey, mom it's nice to see you again after so many hours. I counted the seconds till I met you again'.

'Don't play smart with me girl'.

'whatever gave you the idea, ma'am'.

'Did. You. Get. The. Job?'.

'Yes, I did'.

'Really?' Hope and disbelieve flashed in her face.

'No'.

'Are you making jest of me?'.

'No ma'.

I decided to explain to her even after knowing that was a bad idea I still did.

'So you managed to lose the job the very day you got it?'.

'Yes'.

'I see. Maybe I should accept the offer'.

'Which offer?'. I asked curiously.

'If I may ask'. I quickly added.

'Of course, after all it's about you'.

'You know the Davies family right?'.

'The one doing business with dad?'.

'Yes'.

'One of their sons is interested in you'.

It can't be.

The last time Richard came to this house, he had looked at me like I was a poo and looked at Sophie like she was a goddess. 

How can he be interested in me.

Maybe what I was thinking was written on my face, I don't know but Liza quickly added:

'It's James not Richard, of course, Richard will never be interested in you'.

'Oh'. I said a little disappointed.

Of course it'll be James. The last and ugliest of them.

But wait...

'Isn't he younger than me? I thought he was the same age with Sadie'.

'It doesn't matter. And I'm not your mom'.

And with that she left me there gaping at her back.

She's really gonna give me to someone younger than me?

That's impossible, I'll have to talk to my dad about it. Not that I expect much from him but surely he won't marry me off to someone younger than me.

And this was how it went:

'Good evening ,Dad'.

He kept typing on his laptop, totally ignoring you.

'Hiii?'. 

I waved at his face continuously.

'Heyy?'.

'Hellooo dad?'.

If he wouldn't answer me then I'd force an answer out of him.

'Halooo?'.

'Dadddy?'.

'He--'.

'Speak and get the hell out of my office young lady'.

'Wow, he talks'.

'What did you say?'.

'Nothing, absolutely nothing'.

Silence.

Cold silence.

'So--'.

Silence.

I sighed.

'I want to talk to you about something'.

Silence.

OK, it seems like silence is going to be his only answer.

'Liza wants to marry me off to the youngest son in the Davies family'.

'So? Anything wrong with that?'.

'Yes'.

'I'm older than him, Dad'.

'I still don't see any problem here'.

'You don't see? Well, you were not supposed to see. You were supposed to hear and since you never listen to me I don't know why I wasted my time coming to talk to you'.

I turned and marched off to my room.

They're going to see, I'm going to show them. I'm not marrying that potty faced guy.
