Chapter 2

I turned my head to Sassy's direction when I heard her sigh, I found her staring at the roasted marshmallows that she was holding.

"I wish I can roast my mallows by just looking at it as well." she blurted out and then shifted her gaze to me with her lips pouting.

"I'm so jealous! I want to have powers, too!" she whined like a kid.

I just shook my head at her childish acts and resume roasting the mallows placed in front of us.

We were in my room, watching some Netflix movies and well, roasting mallows.

Sassy and I were friends since kindergarten.

It happened when I accidentally burned a bush of grass in our school garden, all the kids were too afraid of me and started calling me a monster and a freak, it didn't take long before their parents ask the school to suspend me, since according to them I was scaring their kids.

I needed to be homeschooled for that. I have no friends to play with since when our neighborhood heard about that incident at school, they never let their kids play with me anymore.

But one day, Sassy with her mom, came knocking at our doorstep. My mom was actually perplexed with Sassy's mom allowing her to play with me. But later on. Tita Sandy became good friends with my parents as well.

Sassy being a light and kind-hearted kid that she was, liked me very much. We already used to play at school before the accident happened, so our friendship just deepened as time passes.

Tita Sally, later on, convinced my parents to enroll us in a school that is an hour travel away from home. My parents reluctantly let me go, but with Sassy with me at school? I felt safer.

"You'd probably regret saying that if you get to live as a pyrokinetic for almost sixteen years," I said before passing her a blue lemonade that Mom made for us.

"What's not to like? I get to control fire! That's awesome!" she enthusiastically said and kept on enumerating positive sides of being a pyrokinetic, she was also jumping from her seat from time to time to express how thrilled she was about it.

I am deeply moved with how my friend view my ability, not everyone is like Sassy. Not everyone can embrace the fact of having a pyrokinetic as your best friend.

"Thank you." I sincerely said out of the blue. She stopped munching on her mallows and turned her full attention on me. Her eyes are so bright and full of sincerity.

Suddenly, a smile broke into my lips when I saw the tears forming on her eyes.

"You're so bad, Fhyra! You're making me want to cry!" She said and pulled my arms for a tight hug. I was laughing while hugging her back.

"You know I always got your back, right?" she whispered on my ears and I smilingly hugged her tighter as a sign of approval.

"Miss Doneza, for this project you would be working with Mr. Santiago." Our professor instructed as she lends me a paper containing the information needed for our project. I thanked her and went back to my seat to discuss it over with Cool.

I really don't have any problem with having him as my partner. He was actually pretty smart, but he was just too cold and quiet, making everyone feel unwelcomed.

"Cool." I slightly tapped his shoulders to wake him up.

I wonder what he does every night. Why is he so sleepy every day?

He raised his head to face me and gave me a questioning look.

I gave him a warm smile before explaining our project to him. We immediately came to an agreement on how to divide the work.

"Okay, I'll send it to you after I'm done with it." He said.

"Sure. Thanks." I said and smiled once again.

"So, I'll get going first?" I excused as I put all my belongings back inside my bag.

He stared at me for a while before nodding.

"Fhyra," I was just about to step outside the classroom when I heard him call for me. I turned my head to his direction and gave him a questioning look.

He once again stared at me for a moment before shaking his head.

"Take care and don't talk to strangers." He said before he stood up and left the classroom before me.

I was left there dumbfounded, if not for Sassy's persistent calling I don't know how long I would stay standing there like an idiot.

I hurriedly went to the cafeteria where Sassy was already waiting for me with our food. I took a seat in front of her and was about to start eating when someone placed a tray on our table.

When we raised our heads to see who it was, we were confused to see the guy I bumped into the other day.

"Hailec, remember?" he asked smiling.

Sassy and I exchange meaningful looks before looking up to face him again.

"Yeah, how can we help you?" Sassy responded.

"Can I share a table?" Hailec ask and stared back at me.

Sassy uncomfortably shifted on her seat and opened her mouth to say something when another tray was placed above our table.

Cool immediately took the seat beside me and started to eat. Not minding our perplexed faced that was directed at him.

"Cool, we meet again," Hailec said meaningfully and took the seat beside Sassy without our permission. Cool didn't bother to acknowledge his presence and just keep on eating.

Sassy suddenly shuddered, she rubbed her arms with her hands repeatedly.

"What's wrong?" I ask her worriedly.

"It's cold," she said slightly shivering.

"What?" I ask confused. I tried to look around and realize that everyone in the cafeteria seems uncomfortable. Some students even took out some jackets on their bags and wore them.

What's happening?

I glanced back at the guys silently eating in our table, they seems to be unbothered unlike the rest of the students.

I naturally don't feel cold that easy since my temperature is frequently higher than normal because of my ability, however, it confuses me how this two doesn't feel bothered by the so-called "coldness" that everyone was experiencing.

Cool suddenly turned his head towards my direction and caught me staring at them. He raised his thick eyebrows as if asking what I need. I just shook my head and took my sweater from my bag and gave it to Sassy.

She immediately took it and wear it before she proceeded with her food. I watched the two guys as we ate silently. Even the loud and talkative Sassy shut her mouth and just continued to eat in peace.

Cool was the first one to finish eating but he didn't stand up like what I and Sassy was expecting. We thought he just shared a table with us since the cafeteria was packed but it looks like it wasn't the case.

Hailec finished eating as well, followed by Sassy and I was the last one to finish my food.

I took longer than usual because Hailec's stares are making me very uncomfortable, I was actually slightly thankful to Cool, since he does something to take Hailec's attention from time to time.

"Where are you heading?" Hailec ask directly as soon as we stood up. Sassy and I once again had an exchange of uncomfortable looks before I hopefully shifted my gaze to Cool.

Cool stared at me for a while before he faced Hailec.

Both of them were so tall, Sassy, and I needed to slightly look up to be able to face them properly.

I didn't know what Cool told him, but Hailec left immediately after that.

I was about to thank him when he turned around and faced me with a cold expression.

"I told you not to talk to strangers," he said coldly before he took his bag and immediately left the cafeteria.

I turned around to face Sassy with a questioning look.

"What did I do?" I ask, feeling wronged.

"I think I knew!" she said and her voice became dreamy.

"I think Cool likes you and he hated seeing you with another guy! Maybe he got jealous!" she concluded happily and excitedly laid out her hopeless romantic conclusions per Cool's actions today.

I helplessly stared at her as she kept on babbling about me and Cool.

"And I really preferred Cool over that Hailec guy! That guy's a creep!" she exaggerated while we were walking towards our next class.

"And another important thing!" she said as if she remembered something important.

I look at her with anticipation.

"Cool is so handsome!" She said and squealed giddily.

I pinched the bridge of my nose in frustration.

Sassy almost fell on the ground in shock after a light bulb near us exploded.

She then stared at me accusingly.

"Heck! Are you really affected?" she asked, flustered and amazed at the same time.

I just rolled my eyes on her and walk ahead of her.
